Presentation

Neuroscience combines the basic, experimental and formal sciences that study the nervous system for its application to pharmacology, clinical medicine and research. This knowledge allows the development of new strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases originating in the nervous system.

The increase in life expectancy of the population in developed countries challenges us to learn how to age in a healthy and disease-free way. Society needs professionals with a knowledge of the brain and the central nervous system that will enable us to reduce the effects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The neuroscientist also plays a key role in understanding the interaction between behavioral and emotional mechanisms, memory, decision-making processes, on the one hand, and their physiological, genetic and therapeutic dimensions, on the other. And it participates in the development of artificial intelligence technologies, both in the understanding of the brain to improve the algorithms that implement it, and in the improvement of brain-machine interaction.

Neuroscience has a markedly multidisciplinary approach. Sciences such as physics, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, and of course medicine, are interrelated to generate theoretical knowledge, but also applied, albeit in activities different from direct clinical medical practice.

This degree is taught entirely in English, facilitating the international mobility of students, both European and non-European (United States, Canada, etc.) in which Universidad Carlos III de Madrid is a leader, and allowing the recruitment of internationally talented professors.

Mobility

  • Exchange programs

    Exchange programs

The Erasmus programme permits UC3M first degree and post graduate students to spend one or several terms at one of the European universities with which UC3M has special agreements or take up an Erasmus Placement, that is a work placement or internship at an EU company. These exchanges are funded with Erasmus Grants which are provided by the EU and the Spanish Ministry of Education.

The non-european mobility program enables UC3M degree students to study one or several terms in one of the international universities with which the university has special agreements. It also has funding from the Banco Santander and the UC3M.

These places are offered in a public competition and are awarded to students with the best academic record and who have passed the language threshold  (English, French, German etc..) requested by the university of destination.

  • European mobility

    Movilidad europea

The list of European universities with mobility agreements will be published soon.

  • Non-European mobility

    Non-European mobility

The list of non-European universities with a mobility agreement will be published soon.

Profile and carer opportunities

  • Entry profile

    Entry profile

The recommended entry profile focuses on the Bachelor of Science, which provides specific training in key areas. This approach develops essential knowledge and competencies, preparing students optimally for their university studies. In accordance with Spanish regulations, the Baccalaureate includes core subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Technical Drawing and Biology, in addition to other related subjects that contribute to the integral formation of the student and are linked to the Bachelor's Degree curriculum.

In addition to high school students, another important group of access to the Bachelor's Degrees are those coming from Vocational Training. There is no preference for specific training cycles, which means that any student from higher level training cycles has the possibility of accessing the Bachelor's Degree programs.

Application for a place in the degree

  • Graduate profile

    Graduate profile

The Degree in Neuroscience integrates knowledge of Neurology, Biology, Psychology, Mathematics, Bioengineering and Computation, providing applied training, but clearly excluding direct clinical medical practice. The objective of the degree is to provide new professionals with basic knowledge in the different areas in an integrated manner that can be applied to relevant issues related to the functioning of the nervous system at a technical level and can serve as a basis for their integration into the labor market or access to more advanced specializations. To this end, the proposed training objectives are:

    1. Acquire knowledge, demonstrating an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects and methodology of work in the field of Neuroscience with a depth that reaches the forefront of knowledge.
    2. Acquire the ability to bring creative and innovative solutions to the practical and theoretical resolution of problems based on the functioning of the nervous system and the brain; acquire personal and professional problem-solving skills in the design and execution of Neuroscience experiments, including computer modeling and data analysis techniques.
    3. Possess the ability to collect and interpret data and information on which to base their conclusions, including reflection on social, scientific or ethical issues in the field of Neuroscience.
    4. To be able to manage in situations that require the development of new solutions in the academic, work or professional environment within the field of Neuroscience.
    5. Know how to communicate in a clear and precise way, knowledge, methodologies, ideas, problems and solutions in the field of Neuroscience.
    6. Identify their own training needs in their field of Neuroscience and their work or professional environment and to organize their own learning with a high degree of autonomy in all types of contexts.
