Further information

The award of Doctor Honoris Causa or honorary doctorate is a solemn academic procedure incorporating a Spanish or foreign national to the University Senate, conferring an honorary degree for their merit in the academic, scientific or artistic fields of activity.
The solemn act of conferring the title of Doctor Honoris Causa is, together with the Opening of the Academic year, one of the University’s most important ceremonies. The act is held in the Main Hall and is subject to strict protocol; following the laudatio, the diploma is presented, citing the attributes of the degree awarded; the newly appointed doctor is invested with the cap and gown and is presented the  ring, white gloves and the Book of Science and the Medal. The Doctor having been invested, takes the podium to give the lectio magistralis and following this discourse, the Chancellor gives his speech. Finally, the ceremony ends with the  hymn Gaudeamus  Igitur and the retinue leave the Hall.
