    The development of renewable energies requires professionals with specific training who can be integrated into a labor market whose demand for specialized personnel will be increasing. The program benefits from the research excellence of Universidad Carlos III, which is reflected in the international character of its professors, their full-time dedication and their publications in prestigious journals.

    The general objective of the Master’s in Renewable Energies in Electrical Systems is to train professionals who can carry out their activity in the electrical sector and in the renewable energies sector, working on the development and technological innovation of these emerging technologies.

    Education in this Master’s will deal mainly with the following aspects:

    • Renewable energy and energy storage systems technology
    • Integration of renewable energies into electricity markets and systems
    • Renewable energy project management
    • Smart grids and microgrids

    Education and training will be coordinated and taught by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid faculty, with extensive teaching and research experience in renewable energies, as well as with collaboration from industry experts.

      Requirements

      The following candidates may be admitted to the Master's Degree in Renewable Energy in Electrical Systems:

      • Those who have any of the following Bachelor's Degrees: Degree in Electrical Engineering, Degree in Energy Engineering, Degree in Industrial Electronic and Automatic Engineering, Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Degree in Industrial Technologies
      • Those who have a degree in Industrial Engineering
      • Those who have the degree of Industrial Technical Engineer in Electricity, Industrial Electronics and Mechanics
      • Those who hold degrees from other educational systems equivalent to any of the above

      In those cases in which the previous degree does not have a specialization or intensification in electricity or energy, the academic authorities will establish the need to take complementary training courses in those cases in which a lack of knowledge on the analysis and operation of electrical energy systems is detected.
       

      FORMATIVE COMPLEMENTS

      As indicated above, in those cases in which the previous degrees mentioned in the section on specific requirements for access to the master's degree do not have a specialization or intensification in electricity or energy, the academic authorities will establish the need to take the Formative Complements on Structure, analysis and operation of power systems (3 ECTS) in those cases in which a lack of knowledge on the analysis and operation of electrical energy systems is detected.

      Admission criteria

      Student selection will be based on each applicant's CV Specifically we will consider:

      * Language level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
       

      In the event that the course is oversubscribed due to high demand, personal interviews with candidates may be conducted.

      Language requirements

      Check the general language requirements required to study a Master’s at UC3M, depending on whether it is in Spanish, English or bilingual.

      students with foreign university degrees

      Once admitted to the Master’s, students with university degrees issued by a higher education institution belonging to an educational system outside the EHEA, must provide, for enrolment, the diploma, legalized by diplomatic procedures or by means of The Hague Apostille. They must also submit the transcript of records, with the grade point average, duly legalized.

      If needed, documents must be accompanied by an official sworn translation into Spanish.

      TUITION FEES*

      Reservation fee: €450 

      • it will be paid once the student receives notification of admission to the master’s, and deducted from the first tuition payment
      • the reservation fee will only be refunded if the master program is cancelled

      60 ECTS in the first academic year:

      • EU students: €4,800 (€80/ECTS credit)
      • Non EU students: €7,200 (€120/ECTS credit)

      NOTE: the indicated public prices do not include in any case, neither the ECTS corresponding to the Formative Complements that the student must take (only master's degrees with previous Formative Complements), nor the cost of issuing the master’s degree certificate.

      • You may enrol on the master’s degree after completing the admission process and receiving formal confirmation of your acceptance.
      • When performing the enrolment you can choose between Full-time enrolment or Part-time enrolment.
      • The email address provided upon enrolment will be used for formal communications; students are therefore kindly requested to check their mail regularly.
      • Pursuant to the regulations of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a student failing to pay any part of the fees will not be admitted and the enrolment process will be terminated. In cases of cancellation of enrolment due to non-payment, the University may demand the payment of the pending amounts for enrolment in previous academic courses as a prior condition of enrolment.
        No diploma or certificate will be issued if a student has any outstanding payments.

    For the academic year 2024-2025 a call has been published for a maximum of 5 scholarships for payment of the net enrolment fees for students accepted into the Master’s, with the following provision:

    • 5 scholarships of €3,000

    To apply, you must have completed the application for admission to the Master’s.

    • TRAINING ROUTES

      Graduates should be able to conduct and evaluate renewable energy projects, especially with regard to the electricity-related elements included. They should be able to collaborate with companies and organizations in activities to develop new products and technology. They should also be able to determine the economic and technical viability of renewable energy projects, taking into account the law, regulations and the general regulatory environment.

      The curriculum makes these routes to employment available through the selection of appropriate elective subjects to complement the usual specific training for this Master's Degree. However there is no specific group of subjects (pathways, elective blocks, etc.) given that the Master's qualification in itself is already specific enough.

      The goal of this Master's Degree is to produce graduates who are employable in industry and it has been designed to include a special focus on collaboration in this sector. This collaboration is mainly directed in three ways:

      • Professional participants from industry within the Master's Degree's teaching staff.
      • The chance to work on the Master's Thesis in an industry context, supervised by professionals.
      • Industry scholarships for students
    • MASTER’S THESIS

      The Master's Thesis is the culmination of the course and it is intended to expand on the students' ability to produce original work on one of the degree's topics, in which the acquired knowledge will be synthesized. Students will also work on presentation skills and how to defend their work and the conclusions they draw. One-to-one supervision is offered for the Master's Thesis.

      As part of the Master's Thesis, almost all the assignments are carried out in companies and agencies outside the university where students can become familiar with a different context and broaden their knowledge through practically-focused work, meaning an introduction to the activities they will undertake when they enter the world of work. One-to-one supervision is also offered for these tasks.

      • Control of energy storage devices in electrical networks
      • Development of home automation systems for increased energy efficiency
      • Review of models for estimating and predicting direct normal irradiance.
      • LSO testing procedures of representative series generation for solar thermal power plant simulation.
      • The impact of uncertainty on solar radiation measurements for the production of solar thermal power plants
      • Characterization of the Levelized Electric Cost of a typical hybrid FV-Wind system for rural electrification in Latin America.
      • Characterization and implementation of the Levelized Electric Cost of a typical SMH system for rural electrification in Latin America.
      • Characterization and implementation of a GIS for improvement the integration of PV panels in urban areas.
      • Energy evaluation and wind farm design
      • Comparative study on PE between the performance analysis parameters of different technologies.
      • Proposed methodology for calculating power loss and performance analysis of wind farms in accordance with IEC rules 12 and 26.
      • Design of the connection to of an offshore wind farm's to the high voltage electric grids in A.C.
      • Design of an isolated, hybrid or supported PV module solar system for single-family homes.
      • Study of modeling systems for solar radiation.
      • Study of network integration for a multi-megawatt photovoltaic plant (> 10MW)
      • Follow-up study of a circular solar power heliostat array based around a central receptor tower
      • A limited-motion heliostat design for a central receptor tower.
      • Prospective study of smart grids
      • Analysis of wind turbines' critical variables when breakages and serious failures occur.
      • Control panels for managing renewable power generation
      • Analysis of start-up and cut-in speeds for different wind turbine technologies.
