    El objetivo del Máster Universitario Erasmus Mundus en Física de Plasmas y Fusión Nuclear es proporcionar una educación internacional de alto nivel orientada a la investigación en física de la ingeniería relacionada con la energía de fusión, en estrecha relación con las actividades de investigación de las instituciones participantes, y con una experiencia cultural bien integrada. La enseñanza e investigación combinadas y armonizadas de las cinco universidades implicadas, ofrece una gran variedad de competencias en el campo de la ciencia de la fusión y la física de la ingeniería.

    El programa conjunto de máster ofrece una oportunidad Europea única de estudios a nivel de máster en un campo que es de crucial importancia para contribuir a la solución del problema cada vez más urgente y vital de la demanda energética mundial. Las instituciones participantes tienen una larga relación en el marco del programa coordinado de investigación en fusión nuclear de EURATOM.

    La movilidad internacional de los estudiantes es una parte esencial de la filosofía del programa combinando la estancia de los estudiantes en dos universidades de dos países diferentes (primer y segundo semestre en una universidad, tercer y cuarto semestre en una segunda institución, incluyendo la realización del trabajo fin de máster).

  • PROGRAM

    The two-year FUSION-EP program is organised over four semesters. The total training program has to amount ups to 120 ECTS.

    The program structure is combined with a mandatory stay of the student at two universities in two countries as indicated in the table below:

    University A:

    • Semester 1
    • Semester 2
    • Summer Event

    University B:

    • Semester 3
    • Semester 4
    • Summer Event


    A Winter event near Cadarache (ITER site) will take place in the beginning of semester 4 (February-March) and takes 2/3 weeks. The program will contain courses and hands-on research activities in the field of nuclear fusion and plasma physics.

    In between the first and the second year and after the second year a Summer Event (rotating between partners) is organised. At the first Summer Event the partners propose a joint list of master thesis topics, with each topic belonging to a track. Each student now has to choose a particular track and a particular master thesis topic in this track. Coaching is provided at the Summer Event and a fair balancing of the students over the partners is promoted. At the second Summer Event the students defend their thesis in front of an international Examination Committee, the M1 & M2 students and international speakers. The Summer Event takes 5 working days, usually in the week of July 21.

    All the partners offer the four semesters. To provide a general engineering physics education at master level, to prepare the students for the advanced track courses and to accommodate students from different backgrounds (which will remain present in spite of the selection procedure),

        The first semester starts with 4 compulsory physical/technical courses complemented by a Language and Culture course intended to immerse the student in the local language and culture.
        The second semester counts 3 compulsory courses, completed by two elective courses (i.e. courses from a well-defined and restricted list).

    This courses are not identical at each university, but each partner schedules a course which is considered by the consortium to cover the topic indicated by the generic title. The Spanish offer is jointly made by Universidad Carlos III and Universidad Complutense together with the collaboration of the Fusion Division at CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas).

    For the second year (semesters 3 and 4), the student must choose a track or specialization. The program offers 3 tracks, all of them fusion-oriented:

    • T1 (Track 1): Plasma physics (fusion-oriented)
    • T2 (Track 2): Computational methods in physics
    • T3 (Track 3): Plasma and fusion technology & engineering

    The Spanish offer (Universidad Carlos III, Universidad Complutense and CIEMAT) is organised as follows:

    Semester 3 and 4 (60 ECTS)

    The student has to choose one track (T1, T2 or T3), follow courses within this area of specialization (30 ECTS) and carry out the master thesis (30 ECTS) on one topic within the selected track. The courses are:

    • Language and culture (6 ECTS) (compulsory; third semester)
    • One elective course within the track (6 ECTS) (third semester)
    • “Research and training module” (9 ECTS) (third and fourth semester). This module is made of 3 courses: “Plasma physics and fusion seminars” (3 ECTS) plus two elective courses (3 ECTS each)
    • “Winter school” (9 ECTS). All the second year (M2) students follow during 2 / 3 weeks specialized courses on nuclear fusion and plasma physics. The event is held at the ITER site in Cadarache (France) in the beginning of semester 4 (February / March).

    The structure of the second year can be summarized:

    Semester 3:

    • Language and culture (6 ECTS)
    • Elective course (6 ECTS)


    Semester 4:

    • Winter school (ITER) (9 ECTS)


    Both semesters:

    • Research and training module (9 ECTS): "Plasma Physics and Fusion Seminars" (3 ECTS) + 2 elective courses (3 ECTS each)
    • Master thesis (30 ECTS)


    The offer of elective courses in the second year is:

    Language Requirements

    Since English is the official language of the program, a high level of knowledge of written and spoken English is required. This knowledge can be credited with the results of the TOEFL or IELTS, the Certificate of English at the Carlos III University of Madrid, or Cambridge ESOL. As a general rule, the following minimum scores are required:

    • TOEFL (paper test) score of 500
    • TOEFL (internet based test) score of 70
    • IELTS: average score of 6.0
    • Cambridge ESOL: Certificate of Advanced English (CAE)
    • Common European Framework (Languages): Level B2

    The language requirements will not be required to those students whose mother tongue is English or students who have completed their undergraduate studies in English, upon presentation of the relevant documentation.

  • PRACTICAL INFORMATION

    Investigación

    La ciencia e ingeniería de la fusión tiene su área natural de aplicación en los dispositivos de fusión existentes en el mundo (Europa, Japón, Estados Unidos, etc), que demandan un número considerable de expertos en el campo.  Este es el caso, por ejemplo, del CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas), en Madrid, en donde  existe un dispositivo de fusión por confinamiento magnético tipo stellarator y, en especial, del proyecto internacional ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) en Cadarache (Francia) , en fase de construcción, que requerirá en los próximos años un gran número de físicos e ingenieros con una sólida formación en el campo de la física de plasmas y la fusión nuclear.
