Progress in the sciences and technologies involved in the new digital era, such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or data analysis, but also in other important contexts, from biomedicine to finance, requires the correct application of mathematical knowledge, both theoretical and practical.
There is little doubt that Mathematics is a corner stone of STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), key to sustained growth of technologically advanced countries, whose economies require training of such type of professionals. Specifically, the current job market seeks mixed profiles which, being specialized, also feature knowledge from different areas enabling fast adaptation to change.
The Master’s Degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics offered by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid responds to such a demand, by emphasizing a double, computational and mathematical, approach to solving realistic problems, offering multidisciplinar education to holders of STEM Bachelor degrees which, from a solid basic training, is oriented towards the development of quantitative and computational methods which can be applied to a wide spectrum of disciplines.
The main goal is to provide the students with sufficient analytical and numerical capacities and intellectual rigor, which allow them to tackle realistic problems in an ever-changing environment. The necessary mathematical and computational foundations will be provided that enable performance of cutting-edge basic research, either in the academic domain (with the possibility to join the Ph.D. program of the Mathematics Department), or else working in innovative companies within the technology sector in an ample sense.
│MASTER IN NUMBERS
- ☛ The job market for applied mathematicians has been rapidly growing in the last years and is expected to grow even more in the future.
- ☛ The US Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 33% change in employment from 2019 to 2029 for Mathematicians, typically at Master’s degree level and much faster thana average.

REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have a previous university degree, preferably in the areas of:
- Mathematical Sciences, Computer Engineering, Physical Sciences or Statistics
- Telecommunications Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Physical Engineering.
- Other degrees as long as they accredit sufficient levels of knowledge in the area of Mathematics (12 ECTS) and Computer Science (6 ECTS in basic programming skills). It is mandatory to present the syllabus of the essential subjects (or the equivalent ones) taken by the student, namely: (A) Linear algebra; (B) (Differential and integral) Calculus of a single variable; (C) (Differential and integral) Calculus of several variables; (D) Ordinary differential equations; (E) Partial differential equations; (F) Numerical analysis; (G) Probability; and (H) Programming.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
The selection of candidates will be made by the program's Steering Committee. Admission will be based on the merit and ability of the applicants, for which purpose the following criteria will be taken into account:
ADMISSION CRITERIA % Academic record 50% Professional experience 10% Qualifications obtained in essential subjects for the master 20% Motivation, interest and recommendation letters 10% Others 10% ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION
In addition to the mandatory documentation, please be aware of the following instructions:
- It is convenient that you complete and add the following form to your online application: Self-report of relevant courses for the Master in Computational and Applied Mathematics. If your Degree does NOT give preferential access to the program, or you have NOT obtained it in a Spanish institution, completion of this form is MANDATORY.
- Recommendation letters. Recommendation letters are received confidentially through the application system. Recommendation letters can only be sent by recommenders upon request from the candidate. In order to be included in the candidate's application, recommendation letters must be received up to 3 days after submitting the admission application. Please take this into consideration when preparing your application.
Language requirements
Check the general language requirements required to study a Master’s at UC3M, depending on whether it is in Spanish, English or bilingual.
students with foreign university degrees
Once admitted to the Master’s, students with university degrees issued by a higher education institution belonging to an educational system outside the EHEA, must provide, for enrolment, the diploma, legalized by diplomatic procedures or by means of The Hague Apostille. They must also submit the transcript of records, with the grade point average, duly legalized.
More information about Legalization of Foreign Documents.
If needed, documents must be accompanied by an official sworn translation into Spanish.
Those students who require a visa to study in Spain need to request it as soon as they are admitted into the Master program, so as to guarantee their in-person attendance to the lectures as soon as possible in September. - ENROLLMENT
