Transversal (or generic) skills are those abilities, dexterities and attitudes, that are sought after and valued in the labour market and therefore should be acquired by each student independently of the degree they are studying.
The transversal skills are usually classified by 3 types:
A) Instrumental: tools for learning and training - Independent learning techniques, analysis and summary, organisation and planning, problem solving, decision making, basic training skills, oral and written communication and knowledge of foreign languages.
B) Interpersonal: abilities that allow good social relations to be maintained - team work, critical thinking, ethical commitment, recognition of diversity and multiculturalism, negotiation and self-motivation.
C) Systemic: relating to management of all the actions (viewing the bigger picture) - adaptation to new situations, creativity, leadership, initiative and entrepreneurial spirit, quality concern, sensitivity towards environmental issues, project management and management by objectives.
