Presentation Outline: "Time of changes, time of challenges, time of chances."

ABSTRACT: "Is there a better time to stop and think where are we going?

It is time to think how to do things differently. It is time to open our minds, to define our objectives, create our strategies and map out our plans. It is time to face the challenges and lead the change. It is time to plan and prepare our programs to educate and train the next leading generation, as it is them who will be building our future world.

Universities that evolve and develop along with the ever changing environment, will be prime examples for our students. These universities will prepare their students both mentally and emotionally initiate the development, take on challenges, to increase their competitiveness and to be the force behind change.

In this session we will talk about this as well as related topics in preparation of new visions, new ideas and new ways in which to face the future.

Is it a matter of surviving to the new changes? Or understanding and leading what our world should be? "

Presentation outline: A new relation in Governance & Administration: the road to strategic management in Higher Education.

In the Europe of knowledge, Universities have to face the challenge of changing their role, structure, strategy and relationship with the environment in a context of increased competition and social responsibility.

The University must adapt its governing bodies and their management practices to the reality of these new challenges (more or less intense depending on the country considered). Each institution is facing what in the world of business is called a strategic problem and it needs to develop a strategic management system to position the institution in its competitive environment, and thus to ensure its survival and the fulfillment of its missions.

In this context, some important changes have been taking place in the last few years in the governing systems of European Universities. These new systems could bring changes to the University administration organization, and in the way in which University services interact with the governing bodies.

The aim of this interactive workshop is to explore the way in which University services and its directors interact with the governing bodies in different countries in this changing panorama. Some of the possible questions that will be addressed are:

  • How is the new organizational structure of the University represented in the organization chart?
  • Which are the governing bodies in charge of supervising the University administration?
  • What is the University services’ role in the implementation of the institutional strategy?
  • What kind of new managerial units are needed to carry out both the new and the traditional University missions in this new environment? (i.e. marketing, development, etc.)
  • How can the activities of the different University services be aligned with the institution’s strategy and mission?

The presenter will start with an overview of trends in the change of governance and administration in higher education institutions, before inviting the participants to share their ideas and experience in an open discussion. The session will close with a summary of the ideas generated.

Mr. Pedro Castañeda Taladriz

Pedro Castañeda

In 2011 starts working at Carlos III de Madrid University as Head of the new Energy, States Development and Environmental Care Office . This gives him the chance to put in practice the relation between environment sustainability, energy consumption,  and facilities building and maintenance. One of the most interesting examples of that new vision  is how Carlos III de Madrid University was able in 2013 to obtain the Platinum degree in LEED (Leadership in environmental enhancement Design) for the new 22.000 sqrm Carmen Martin Gaite Building in Getafe Campus.

That recognition of the US Green building Council, made the Carlos III de Madrid University become the first one in Spain and ninth in the world to achieve that goal.

Pedro also designed and started the SmartCampusUC3M2020 project that aims to help this institution to be an example on how technology applied to the everyday life of the University by machine to machine, people to machine and people to people communications can make everyone’s life easier, more sustainable with environment, more inexpensive, and more friendly for everyone.

As leader and coordinator of the  Environmental enhancement of Spanish University buildings  workgroup, Pedro has the chance to share with all colleges in Spain the experiences in the Conference of Spanish Rectors sectoral commission (CADEP-CRUE) meetings every season.

Presentation outline: Management under the Cloud / University ‘Smart Management’ Workshop

Abstract: In these days, “the cloud” is where the services for the community take place, due to machine to machine communications (m2m), people to people (p2p), people to machines (p2m), machines to people (m2p) and the Internet of things (IoT). Everything is going on above our heads, making life easier, more sustainable, more efficient, less expensive.

Since people can self-manage by their own, which is the role of University Managers in this new scenario?

In a changing world, University Management should be updated.
