  • CONTENTS

    Objetives:

    Communication and awareness-raising on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion, understanding diversity as anything that makes a difference within a group, whether physical, organisational, psychological or behavioural characteristics.

     

    Topics to be addressed:

    • Diversity in the framework of the human resources strategy for faculty.
    • Diversity and ethical principles: equality and non-discrimination.
      • Academic work in socially, ethnically, linguistically, linguistically or culturally diverse environments.
      • Sexual identity and orientation as a factor of diversity
      • Disability and functional diversity

     

    • Academic, professional... and life careers: The need to apply the holistic approach of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers
      • Multidisciplinarity and excellence in research: managing diversity in science teams
      • Interrupted and/or late academic careers
      • Mixed careers?:
      • A view from the private sector: possible best practices to enhance future mobility.
      • An insight into the experience of mobility between the public sector and the University.

    4.10 p.m. First discussion panel: Diversity and ethical principles: Equality and non-discrimination. Moderated by Álvaro Escribano, Professor of Applied Economics and Director of the International School of UC3M. 

    • Academic work in socially, ethnically, linguistically or culturally diverse environments Yuko Morimoto, Director of Asian Studies at the International School, Vice-Dean of Student Orientation at the FHCD and Professor of Spanish Language at UC3M. 
    • Identity and sexual orientation as a factor of diversity Alfredo Corell, Professor of Immunology and Vice-Rector of Teaching Innovation and Digital Transformation at the University of Valladolid. 
    • Disability and functional diversity María del Mar Jiménez Navas, Associate Professor of Financial and Tax Law, University of Seville.
    • Multidisciplinarity and excellence in research: managing diversity in science teams. Ramón Rico, Professor of Business Organisation, Department of Business Economics. Expert in organisational behaviour.

Academic, professional...and life careers: the need to apply the holistic approach of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (c&c). Moderated by Susana Roza, Journalist, presenter of news programmes in different media and founder of the communication company "Mejor Dicho".

    • A vision of the experience of mobility between the public sector and the University: Francisco Marcellán, Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at UC3M, President of the Spanish Royal Mathematical Society and former Secretary General for Science and Technology Policy.

  • EVENT SUMMARY

    Synopsis:

    On Thursday 25 March 2021, the seminar 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UC3M' took place, the fourth of those organised by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid within the framework of the actions to promote and communicate tools and actions linked to the Human Resources Award.

    Montserrat Abad Castelos, Deputy Vice-Rector for Teaching Staff, who in her introduction on the role of diversity in the framework of the HRS4R strategy at the Carlos III University advocated applying a holistic approach to both the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

    The first panel, entitled 'Diversity and ethical principles: equality and non-discrimination', was moderated by Professor of Applied Economics and Director of the UC3M International School, Álvaro Escribano. Yuko Morimoto gave a keynote speech, stating that the future is inevitably globalised and diverse. Therefore, it is necessary for the faculty to represent this diversity. Alfredo Corell, focused his speech on the topic 'Identity and sexual orientation as a factor of diversity' and highlighted the need to promote training among faculty, administrative and service staff and students, as well as the implementation of mechanisms to prevent aggression. María del Mar Jiménez Navas, after acknowledging that blindness is not an impediment to strictly teaching work, pointed out the major obstacles she encounters when it comes to fulfilling other requirements, such as stays abroad or the need to publish articles. Ramón Rico, who in the field of diversity management in teams, explained that those who bring together different people are the ones who have the greatest capacity to respond to new situations.

    The second panel, entitled 'Academic, professional... and life careers: the need to apply the holistic approach of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers', was moderated by the journalist Susana Roza. The first speaker was Maribel Canto, who explained that Spanish universities punish career interruption. Javier López advocated working on transversal competences (time management, leadership, etc.), an aspect defended by the EU itself in the framework of HRS4R. Francisco Marcellán advocated that universities should learn from their students and also from teachers who have been managers in the public sector.
