The UC3M stands out for its reputation among employers, such as human resources managers and company CEOs, a field in which it has moved up 11 places and in which it is ranked among the top 200 universities in the world. In addition to this, the UC3M holds outstanding positions for its academic reputation, where it has moved  5 places, and for its student to teaching staff ratio (one place higher).

Developed for the first time in 2004 by the British consultancy company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), this ranking analyses universities’ performance in four areas:  teaching, employability, internationalisation, and research. For this purpose, the ranking is based on six indicators: the institution’s academic reputation based on responses from more than 130,000 teaching staff (40%), citations that researchers received in academic publications between 2015 and 2019 (20%), student/teaching staff ratio(20%), reputation among 75,000 employers (10%), the number of international teaching staff at the institution (5%) and attracting international students (5%).

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Oxford University, Stanford University, Cambridge University and Harvard University rank highest globally. This classification includes a total of 1,300 universities, 145 more than last year's edition, 29 of which are located in Spain.
