Integral accessibility plan

 
 

AREA: Transformation of the campus in order to develop a model of social integration.

PROJECT: Comprehensive Accessibility Plan

OBJECTIVES: The ultimate goal of this plan is to ensure that the University will provide a universally accessible environment, free from barriers, guaranteeing that everybody, regardless of age, disability or other condition, will have the same independent access opportunities to any part of the campus, where they can carry out their activities and use the services on offer.

In the 2011/12 academic year, several projects were carried out within the Comprehensive Accessibility Plan on the three UC3M campuses:
 

Getafe Campus

Building work carried out on buildings on the campus; adaptation of restrooms, stairs, ramps and so on.

  • Substitution of conventional doormats by adapted doormats at the entrances to campus buildings.
  • Work carried out to improve staircases, installation of handrails and cushioning to prevent injury to people with impaired vision. 
  • Installation of a metallic loop in the Salón de Grados.
  • Adaptation of the desk at the photocopy service and stationery office in building 17.
  • Construction of ramps on walkways on the campus.
  • Installing new restrooms and non-slip mats on the stairs in building 11.
  • Purchase of IT programs and equipment for disabled people.

 Leganes Campus

  • Installation of four automatic doors in the Betancourt building.
  • Building work carried out on buildings on the campus; adaptation of toilets, stairs, ramps and so on.
  • Installation of two automatic doors in the Betancourt Sabatini building.
  • Work carried out to improve staircases, installation of handrails and cushioning to prevent injury to people with impaired vision.
  • Installation of a metallic loop in the Salón de Grados.
  • Installation of two automatic doors in the Padre Soler building.
  • Adaptation of the desk at the photocopy and stationery office Betancourt building and in the PIC
  • Service in the Sabatini building.

Adaptation of the customer services desk in the library.
 

Colmenarejo Campus 

 

  • Installation of two automatic doors in the Miguel de Unamuno building.
  • Installation of a metallic loop in the Salón de Grados.
  • Adaptation of the desk in the PIC Service in the Miguel de Unamuno building.
  • The accessibility work began in July 2011 and was completed in December of the same year.

In 2013 implementation of the Comprehensive Accessibility Signage project began on the Getafe, Leganés and Colmenarejo Campuses; this was made possible by a specific grant of €24,980 from Fundación ONCE and began with the incorporation of maps and plans meeting universal accessibility requirements and improvement of signage and basic resources for people with disabilities, elevators and adapted restrooms, for example.
