Human Rights, Rule of Law, and Democracy

The Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy group is the impulse behind, and responsible for the "Gregorio Peces-Barba” Human Rights Institute at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a center for excellence in the Human Rights field. It is linked to the UC3M’s Department of Public International Law, Ecclesiastic Law and Philosophy of Law and is part of the Philosophy of Law Area.

The group is responsible for the project “El tiempo de los derechos”(“The age of rights”) within the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Program (Spanish scientific Excellence program), this being the first time that a Law-related group has gained access to this program.

The research carried out by the group has been recognized as demonstrated by support from public and private Institutions, and through awards, such as the CERMI award for research on the rights of disabled citizens. Furthermore, the group issues thorough reports of its activities. In the last 5 years it has given more than 200 conferences in various Congresses and Seminars.

The Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy research Group is made up of 25 researchers (23 PhD’s and 2 pre-doctoral researchers).

Legal Clinic

The team carries out Legal Clinic activities –a Law-training model based on the connection between social and legal reality-. This methodology allows students to obtain better technical-legal training with a more practical orientation; it promotes sensitivity, helps in the fight for Human Right’s effectiveness and promotes collaboration with civil society.

Publications and Editorial Activities

In the past five years, the Group’s researchers have published 46 articles in scientific magazines, 112 chapters in publications and 39 books.

Moreover, the group carries out editorial activities focused on the “Derechos and Libertades” (Rights and Liberties) magazine, which can be found in prominent databases in Spanish. Furthermore, the group directs the electronic magazine “Universitas” and the monographic collection “Cuadernos Bartolomé de las Casas” from the Bartolomé de las Casas Human Rights Institute.

Research

The group carries out an average of 4 research projects a year. In the past 5 years, 32 doctoral theses have been directed by the group, as well as 50 research dissertations. 

Main research areas: Human Rights, Equality, Non-discrimination and vulnerable groups, Theory of Law and Legal Argumentation, Political Philosophy and Bioethics. 

Cooperation

The Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy Group has directed 10 cooperation projects with different entities with the aim of improving Human Rights in Spain and in Latin America, with a total of 8 in the last 5 years.

Furthermore, the group is in contact with Institutions, Public Administration, University centers, Research Institutes and Universities which are especially dedicated to Human Rights, giving priority to subjects related to our lines of research.

Graduate studies

The professors in the group teach subjects in different graduate and undergraduate studies in the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The group has taken part in more than 10 Official Graduate Studies programs and in more than 50 Graduate programs created by specific Universities and Research Centers.
