    El Máster en Derechos Fundamentales aims to train for the defense, promotion and exercise of human rights in three key sectors: that of public, national and international institutions, organizations and organizations; that of Non-Governmental Associations and Organizations; and the practice of law and forensic practice.     In the Master's Degree in Fundamental Rights, more than 40 professors from different disciplines, experts of recognized prestige, with extensive experience in teaching and research in human rights and with important publications, from Spanish and foreign universities participate , and from different areas of knowledge. Leading members of Non-Governmental Organizations, Public Organizations and members of International Organizations for the defense and protection of human rights also participate.

    Thus, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the Master, the teaching staff covers the areas of Law (both Philosophy of Law, International Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Law, Labor Law, Criminal Law), Criminology, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Social Work, Communication, among others. All of them of recognized prestige, with extensive experience in teaching and research in human rights, in professional practice and the defense of human rights and with publications of importance and impact.

  • ADMISSION
    • ADMISSION

      The Master is aimed at bachelor, graduates and engineers, especially for graduates in Law, Humanities, Social Work, Criminology, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Journalism and Social Sciences. In general, people who have graduated from a university degree from anywhere in the world. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Human Rights and of this Master in particular, a specific discipline is not required. It is positively valued that they dominate Spanish and that they perform or intend to carry out activities related to the defense, promotion, praxis, teaching or research of human rights.

      The selection of students will be carried out continuously, as the applications are received.

      The selection will be made taking into account the academic record, professional experience in relation to human rights, participation in courses on human rights and the curriculum vitae in general.

      Seating Reserve

      Once the admission is confirmed, the student will have to reserve his place with the payment of € 1000 that will be deducted from the rest of the tuition and that will only be returned in the event of impossibility of attendance due to justified illness or another reason due to comparable gravity.

    • REGISTRATION

      The amount of the Master's tuition is 4.000 euros.

      Payment of this amount may be divided into three installments distributed as follows:

      •  The first term, once you have notified in writing your admission to the Master, you must enter the amount of € 1000, as payment of the first term and reservation of place. You can only request the return of the reservation rights of place, in the event of the impossibility of assistance due to a justified serious illness or other reason arising from comparable seriousness.
      • The second installment, for an amount of € 1500, has a payment deadline of October 31, 2018
      • The third term, for an amount of € 1500, has a payment deadline on March 15, 2019.

    The Master en Derechos Fundamentales, organized by the Instituto Universitario de Derechos Humanos “Bartolomé de las Casas” of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, aims to train professionals who want to dedicate themselves to the practice of defense, promotion and exercise of Human rights, especially to work in public organizations, national and international government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations, International Organizations, Social Advocacy Centers, Foundations, Associations, Consulting and related organizations.

    Therefore, it provides theoretical and practical instruments with which to comprehensively address the defense, investigation and study of human rights, from the general theory of human rights, the legal regime and guarantees at the level of the universal human rights system and the different regional defense and guarantee systems, and the current challenges that social and political reality poses to human rights, including a period of external internships in Non-Governmental Organizations and Legal Clinic.

    To contribute, in synthesis, to the best training of human rights specialists, backed by the experience of the Bartolomé de Las Casas Institute of Human Rights with almost four years of history, pioneer in research and teaching in human rights in Spain.

    Our students, coming from all over the world, currently work in various international and national institutions: in the United Nations, in different NGOs in Spain, in other countries and internationally, in public organizations of different countries, Ombudsmen, Universities, Ministries, Legal Studies, Courts of Justice, Institutes or Centers for the defense and study of human rights, among others.

  • PRACTICAL INFORMATION

    Objectives

    The Master en Derechos Fundamentales, organized by the Instituto Universitario de Derechos Humanos "Bartolomé de las Casas" of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid aims to train professionals who want to devote themselves to the practice of defense, promotion and exercise of human rights, especially to work in public organizations, national and international government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, foundations, associations, consulting and related organizations. Therefore, provide technical and practical instruments with which they comprehensively address the defense, investigation and study of human rights, from the general theory of human rights, the legal regime and guarantees at the level of the universal human rights system and the different regional defense and guarantee systems, and the current challenges that social and political reality poses to human rights, including a period of external internships in Non-Governmental Organizations and Legal Clinic. All this, to contribute to the best training of human rights specialists, backed by the experience of the Instituto de Derechos Humanos "Bartolomé de las Casas" and the 18 editions of the Master, which have included students from all parts of the world and from all professions.

    For this, the staff of teachers who teach in the Master's Degree is of renowned experts, with extensive experience in teaching and research in human rights and with important publications, which are professors and professors from different Spanish Universities and from different areas of knowledge. Leading members of Non-Governmental Organizations and members of International Organizations for the defense and protection of human rights also participate.

    Duration and organization

    The duration of the Master is one academic year, with full-time dedication, beginning classes in September 2019 and ending in July 2020.

    The teaching load is 60 ECTS credits of which 4 credits correspond to the Introductory Course, 9 credits to the General Theory of Human Rights, 6 credits to the Legal Regime and Human Rights Guarantees, 25 credits to the current Challenges to human rights , 8 to the Legal Clinic and 8 to external Practices.

    Classes are held Monday through Friday in afternoon sessions, usually. In the morning, different Seminars, Conferences and Workshops are offered as a complement to the training on various current issues related to human rights, organized by the Instituto de Derechos Humanos “Bartolomé de las Casas” for its students.

    The evaluation system will consist of written examinations (Block II and III) and research papers (Block IV), depending on the Subjects. It is necessary, in order to obtain the degree, the overcoming of each of the Blocks in which the program is divided and the favorable report of the Practicum and the Legal Clinic.

  • AIDS

    The Fundación  "Rodolfo Benito Samaniego"will grant an aid (during the first quarter of the 2019/2020 academic year) whose endowment is 100% of the Master's tuition. This call can only be accessed by students already enrolled in the Master and will be reimbursed the amount paid.

    Is it necessary to approve the Bachelor / Graduate degree obtained abroad to achieve the Master's degree?

    It is not necessary to approve the Bachelor / Graduate degree in order to complete the Master. The Master's degree in Derechos Fundamentales is a degree of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, therefore the only thing that is necessary is to validate the degree. The validation is an authorization that is processed and granted by the same Universidad Carlos III de Madrid to study third cycle. For this, it is required as an indispensable requirement to be a Bachelor / Graduate (in any discipline and by any University in any part of the world, whether public or private).

     

    Do I need to be a Bachelor/ Graduate in Law to take the Master?

    To take the Master en Derechos Fundamentales, it is required as an indispensable requirement to be a Bachelor / Graduate but the discipline is not specified (due to the interdisciplinary nature of Human Rights and of this Master in particular). Therefore, you can be a Bachelor / Graduate in any discipline and by any University in any part of the world, whether public or private.

     

    Do I have to legalize the documents (Bachelor / Graduate degree, qualifications, titles of postgraduate studies carried out) that are required to qualify for a place in the Master?

    It is necessary that the degree and qualifications obtained have the stamps and legalizations corresponding to the University that has granted them together with the Apostille of The Hague. The rest of the documentation attached does not require special legalization.

     

    Is attendance at the Master obligatory?

    The methodology of the Master requires the attendance because all subjects are face-to-face.

     

    Is it possible to justify the lack of assistance?

    Yes, it is possible to justify the absence. Previously, if it is possible to anticipate the circumstance, or as soon as possible. In both cases, a note must be presented at the Secretariat addressed to the Director of the Master, explaining the reasons for the absence and with any documentation that justifies it.

     

    Is it possible to obtain a certificate from the Secretariat of the Institute?

    There are two types of documents through which aspects such as student status or grades are recorded. Some are official and must be requested from the Secretariat of the School of Graduates Studies (they are called certificates and are signed by the Vice-Rector for the Third Cycle); others have an informative value (they receive the name of certificates) and it is possible to request them in the Secretariat of the Master or by email to the address mdf@uc3m.es, clearly specifying what circumstances you want to be recorded as well as the justification of the request. It is also necessary to include the personal identification data and the reference of the promotion of the Master courses to which it belongs. The records will be collected in the Secretariat of the Institute one week after your request.

     

    Can I use the University facilities during the weekend and holidays?

    Yes, the University has enabled some facilities so that students can use them on weekends and holidays. To this end, for security purposes, interested persons must communicate in the Master's Secretariat (personally or número de documento de identidad, Identity card or passport and the days you need to enter the University.

     

    How can you know the qualifications?

    School of Graduates Studies has enabled the Global Classroom service for people enrolled in the Master, so the qualifications can be known by consulting the file through the website of the Carlos III University of Madrid. Likewise, the Secretariat of the Master sends an individual email informing of the qualifications obtained in each teaching block.

     

    What is the exam review procedure?

    The exam review process is as follows:

    1. The student must present in the Secretariat of the Master or send by email to the addressn mdf@uc3m.es es a note addressed to the Director of the Master stating his name, the exam to be reviewed and the reasons why It is considered that the qualification should be modified.

    2. From the Directorate of the Master, through the Secretariat, this note will be transferred to the teacher or the teacher who coordinates the subject.

    3. The teacher will send your answer in writing.

    4. The secretariat of the Institute will communicate the response to the student citing, if the professor or the professor considers it necessary, a personal interview to review their exam.

     

    Can a third person withdraw a Master's degree from a student?

    In principle, it is the student himself who must withdraw the degree. In case this is not possible, a third person who would like to withdraw the title in his name can do so if he presents the following documents:

    1. Letter from the student authorizing the third party, duly certified (Apostille of the Hague is not necessary, but of a notary or notary or public authority).

    2. Photocopy of the identity document of the student whose title is intended to be collected.

    What is the procedure for awarding the Institutions in which external practices are carried out?

    External practices are carried out within the framework of Agreements signed by the Carlos III University of Madrid with the reference Institution. The Institutions and Organizations are made known to the students of the Master to indicate three options of Institutions of practices in order of preference. Then, it is the Directorate of the Master who makes the allocation of the destinations. For this, the file is taken into account (the academic results are especially valued in the context of the Master's program), the profile and the personal option in relation to the profile required by each Institution and the activities that would be carried out there, and the places available.

     

    If I have a problem related to the Master, who can I contact?

    In principle, students should go to the Secretariat of the Institute to request any information or raise doubts that may arise, by doing so personally or by email. You can also write mail to the Master's Address to make an appointment with them or tutorial.

     

    In my country there is change control, can the University certify the cost of the Master's tuition?

    Yes, the student will request this certificate from the Master's Secretariat and within a maximum period of 72 hours they may have it.

     

    Do I have to somehow certify my Spanish domain to be able to take the Master?

    To take the Master it is necessary to have mastery of the Spanish language that allows you to follow the explanations, since the classes are taught in that language and also the realization of exams and papers. If you are a national of a country that is not Spanish-speaking, you do not need to present certifications that prove your language level, but it is a requirement that you have an intermediate level of Spanish that allows you to read, speak, write and understand with some naturalness.

    In any case, Spanish courses are taught at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid for all those who wish to deepen their knowledge.

     

    Is there health insurance for students of the Master?

    People who are nationals of countries that do not belong to the European Union must take out private medical insurance during their studies in Spain, as a requirement to regularize their situation as a foreigner. Although all people who are in Spain are entitled to medical assistance in public health centers, this only applies to emergency cases, thus not covering non-urgent consultations or treatments.

    What legal regime do foreign students have in Spain? Do I need a special document?

    From the Directorate of the Master it is possible to send the acceptance letter to carry out the Master's courses, which the Consulate generally requires for the processing of visas. For this, the interested person must request it in due time, by letter or email to the Secretariat.

    Once in Spain, people who are nationals of countries that do not belong to the European Union must necessarily regularize their situation. To do this, they must go to the nearest Police Station according to their registration (proof of registration of domicile at the corresponding Town Hall headquarters).

    The requirements and deadlines vary depending on the country of origin, but due to the complexity of the documentation needed and the rigorous deadlines, it is recommended that each student find out the same at the consular headquarters of Spain in their country before traveling to Spain and well in advance to process the corresponding visas.
