Suman Barnejee- University of Wisconsin-Madison

Suman Banerjee is a Professor in Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the founding director of the WiNGS laboratory which broadly focuses on research in wireless and mobile networking systems.  He has published more than 100 technical papers in leading conferences and journals.  He received his undergraduate degree from IIT Kanpur, and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Maryland.  He is the inaugural recipient of the ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar award and a recipient of the US National Science Foundation Career Award.  He served as the chair of ACM SIGMOBILE from 2013 to 2017.

Project:

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), the expected future of smart transportation, are occasionally plagued with failures when such systems receive contradictory inputs from its sensors or the environment. The common approaches in such scenarios are either to return control to the driver or to immediately stop the vehicle, both of which are fraught with challenges. This project will explore an alternative where control is returned to a remotely located expert driver (e.g., in special call centers). While the overall project is particularly ambitious and is likely to be a multi-year effort, the goals of this first year work, during the sabbatical visit, would be to design an appropriate low-latency network architecture to accomplish desired safety goals. We anticipate that the project will leverage interesting collaboration opportunities between Prof. Banerjee, and colleagues at IMDEA with experience in designing different types of networking systems.
