Matías Rodríguez Inciarte receives the UC3M Medal of Honour, the highest award for his contribution to university values

Matías Rodríguez Inciarte has received the Medal of Honour from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) in recognition of his professional work and services provided to the University. This award was presented during the opening ceremony for the 2023-2024 academic year, chaired by the UC3M Rector, Ángel Arias.

Matías Rodríguez Inciarte (Oviedo, 1948) is President of Santander Universities and Vice-President of Universia. He is also president and director of several companies and a member of the Advisory Board of UNESCO’s “Future of Education” project. He has held various positions in the Spanish Administration and he was Minister of the Presidency between 1981 and 1982. He was a Director and Vice-President of Banco Santander between 1988 and 2017. From 2008 to 2023, he chaired the UC3M Social Council.
During his time as President of the Social Council, various initiatives for the improvement and progress of the University were promoted. Some of them have been decisive, such as the Social Council's Business Forum, created in 2012; the Excellence Awards, which will celebrate their 16th year next academic year; the Emprende Awards; and the recent Awards for Secondary School Research Work.
The award, agreed by the Governing Council on 14th September 2023, recognises Rodríguez Inciarte's contribution to university values over all these years.
In his acceptance speech, Matías Rodríguez Inciarte remembered his predecessors, the various rectors with whom he had worked over the years, as well as the members of the Social Council. He also expressed his optimism for the future of the University and for its ability to advance in excellence.
