UC3M holds the Thesis Talk 2022
How to present a PhD thesis in three minutes

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)’s Doctoral School held the sixth edition of Thesis Talk, a competition in which PhD students present their research project in less than three minutes. This presentation tests the participants’ ability to summarise and communicate.

The final, held on the 4th of July at UC3M’s Leganés campus, brought together 20 participants selected from the PhD students who applied this year. During the session, the finalists presented their research projects in areas such as material science, communication, human rights, humanities, electrical, electronic and automatic engineering, mechanical engineering and industrial organisation, computer science, mathematics, plasma and nuclear fusion, biomedical technology, etc.
This year’s winners, who received prizes of 900, 600 and 300 euros, were: Andrea Fernández Toribio, a Biomedical Science and Technology PhD student, with her presentation “Automatizar la reproducciónasistida: ¿realidad o ficción?” (“Automating assisted reproduction: reality or fiction?”); Lucía Cubero Gutiérrez, a Biomedical Science and Technology PhD student, with her presentation “Aplicaciones de inteligencia artificial para mejorar la radioterapia de cabeza y cuello” (“Artificial intelligence applications to improve head and neck radiotherapy”); and Lisbeth Karina Mena López, an Electrical, Electronic and Automatic Engineering PhD student, with her presentation “Robots de papel” (“Paper robots”).
The Thesis Talk participants must give a presentation in less than three minutes, in Spanish or English, with only a presentation slide or an overhead slide. The jury, made up of UC3M lecturers and external professionals, assesses the PhD students’ ability to present the objective and results of their theses, the background and impact of the research, as well as the order and articulacy and their ability to present ideas and attract the audience’s attention.
This presentation format – Three Minute Thesis (3MT) – developed by the University of Queensland (Australia), has been adopted by more than two hundred universities worldwide.
