Drawn up for the first time in 2004 by the British consultancy firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), this ranking assesses a university’s performance in four areas: research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. It uses six indicators as a basis for this: the academic reputation of the institution, its reputation among employers, the citations which researchers' scientific publications receive, the student/teacher ratio and its ability to attract international students and teachers from abroad.

Looking at each of the indicators, UC3M has improved its reputation among employers, where it ranks 128th worldwide, representing a jump of 21 positions compared to last year. It has also improved its ranking in terms of academic reputation, where it has climbed from position 279 to 232 worldwide. In order to arrive at these findings, a survey was carried out of 126,000 employers and academics and their answers assessed.

UC3M also excels in terms of the student/teacher ratio, where it occupies 210th position worldwide. "A high number of teachers per student is an indirect indicator of the institutions' commitment to high quality teaching" explains the QS World University Rankings 2019 report.

With this latest ranking, UC3M is placed in the first percentile of universities in the world for the first time, that is to say, it features among the top 25 percent of the best higher education institutions.

With the 253th position, UC3M gets the sixth position in Spain, behind Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (159), Universidad de Barcelona (166), Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (193), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (206) and Universidad de Navarra (242). Globally, the top positions are held by US institutions, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University.
