Light and based technologies provide means for addressing current global challenges such as sustainable development, the generation of 'clean energy' and the improvement of people's health and well-being. Its transversal character allows the rise of new "hybrid" technologies such as the Nanophotonics, Biophotonics, Photonics in Medicine, Environmental Photonics, Consumer Photonics and Optical Communication Photonics, etc. That is why Photonics is identified in Europe and the United States as one of the key technologies for fostering future economic development.
The main goal of the Interuniversity Master in Photonics Engineering is to prepare professionals with a high level of expertise in cutting-edge photonics technologies and being able to innovate using them,
- with a practical vision,
- providing subtainable solutions in different environments,
- having the proper tools to get involved in an industry demanding experts on those technologies,
- for creating starts-up or researching in that field.
After finishing the master degree, students can enroll in Electrical, Electronics and Automation Engineering PhD degree program among others.

- CURRICULUM
- CURRICULUM
This is a master's degree that is taught during an academic course with a set of 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer) of compulsory subjects, 18 ECTS of elective subjects and 12 ECTS of Master's thesis Work.
The optional subjects are distributed in 2 training tracks. The student should choose at least 12 ECTS within a specific track to get a mention on it. It is also possible to combine subjects from both tracks. Plus a New Trends and Entrepreneurship subject is offered, which includes a series of seminars, including activities related to entrepreneurship (how to start a spin-off, intellectual property rights, Innovation management ...), along with an optional internship for the development of photonic systems applications. This subject allows to approach the student to practical cases in the professional environment or to the latest research trends. There is also the possibility of developing short international mobility activities.
In the compulsory subjects, the basic fundamentals for the design of photonic subsystems with novel technologies are covered, from an applied engineering perspective (in modulus M1) and its practical implementation at the laboratory level together with the necessary simulation tools (in modulus M2). Most of the elective credits are distributed in 2 tracks: photonic systems (I1) described in modulus M3 and photonics devices (I2) described in modulus M4. There is another modulus M5 including internship, and compulsory entrepreneur activities.
The different subjects will be taught at one of the 3 universities that participate in the master degree program: Carlos III of Madrid University, Polytechnic of Madrid University and Alcalá University.

Requirements
General prerequisites: incoming students must meet the requirements established by the Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September 2021, which apply to both Spanish university degrees and institutions of the European Higher Education Area and to foreign educational systems, without the need for its homologation, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to the official Spanish degree and that it qualifies the holder for admission to a master's degree.
The prerequisite for admission to the Master in Photonics Engineering programme concerns the following student profile:
Graduates:
- Graduate in Telecommunication Engineering (Degree in Telecommunication Technologies Engineering, Degree in Telecommunication Systems Engineering, Degree in Communications Electronic Engineering, Degree in Telematics Engineering, Degree in Audiovisual Systems Engineering)
- Graduate in Industrial Engineering (depending on the specialization),
- Graduate in Materials Engineering,
- Graduate in Physics (depending on the specialization)
Former degrees:
- Telecommunication Engineer or Industrial Engineer (5 yrs)
- Graduate in Physical Sciences
- Technical Engineer Telecommunication or Industrial Technical Engineer in Electronics (3 yrs) (depending on professional experience)
- Other engineering degree (depending on the curricula).
Concerning the abroad students, equivalent Degrees required are: 4 yrs or 3 yrs Bachelor Electrical Engineer or Physics (depending on curricula), 4 yrs Bachelor in related topics depending on curricula (Biomedical, Aeronautical…) and 5 yrs Electronic or Communications Engineer
Other degrees with sufficient training in the field of photonics and technology both nationally and internationally, may be considered by the Master´s Academic Committee.
Admission criteria
The following criteria will be considered:
ADMISSION CRITERIA WEIGHT Applicant’s academic degree. Preferred degrees are those mentioned explicitly in the admission prerequisites * 25% Applicant’s academic record 65% Applicant’s professional experience in disciplines related with photonics or their scientific experience in this field 5% Recommendation letters from academic, professional or scientific references vouching for the applicant's admission to the Master 2% English level above the minimum one required for admission 3% * Every course, the Master´s Academic Committee will elaborate a list of related degrees and their qualification according to the degree and institution.
A personal interview with the Master´s Academic Committee may be also considered in the event that the course is oversubscribed due to high demand.
Language requirements
Check the general language requirements required to study a Master’s at UC3M, depending on whether it is in Spanish, English or bilingual.
students with foreign university degrees
Once admitted to the Master’s, students with university degrees issued by a higher education institution belonging to an educational system outside the EHEA, must provide, for enrolment, the diploma, legalized by diplomatic procedures or by means of The Hague Apostille. They must also submit the transcript of records, with the grade point average, duly legalized.
More information about Legalization of Foreign Documents.
If needed, documents must be accompanied by an official sworn translation into Spanish.
- ENROLLMENT
TUITION FEES
Reservation fee: €450
- it will be paid once the student receives notification of admission to the master’s, and deducted from the first tuition payment
- the reservation fee will only be refunded if the master program is cancelled
60 ECTS in the first academic year:
- EU students: €2,701.2 (€45.02/ECTS credit)
- Non EU students: €5,044.2 (€84.07/ECTS credit)
NOTE: the indicated public prices do not include in any case, neither the ECTS corresponding to the Formative Complements that the student must take (only master's degrees with previous Formative Complements), nor the cost of issuing the master’s degree certificate.
Additional information
- You may enrol on the master’s degree after completing the admission process and receiving formal confirmation of your acceptance.
- When performing the enrolment you can choose between Full-time enrolment or Part-time enrolment.
- The email address provided upon enrolment will be used for formal communications; students are therefore kindly requested to check their mail regularly.
- Pursuant to the regulations of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a student failing to pay any part of the fees will not be admitted and the enrolment process will be terminated. Mobility / Internships
- Fachhochschule Darmstadt , Alemania
- University of Kent at Canterbury, Reino Unido
- Telecom Bretagne, Francia
