Doctoral Training Scholarships

Ayudas predoctorales

There is a wide range of pre-doctoral scholarships that cover tuition fees (part or all of them) and may on occasion allow UC3M to offer the candidate a work contract as a research assisstant.
 

Each awarding body has its own deadlines, application process and selection criteria. 


Besides applying for financial aid, it is necessary to submit an application to the UC3M Ph.D. Program, since awarding bodies will require candidates to provide proof of acceptance to a Ph.D. Program during the application process.


Doctoral research will be carried out as part of the Ph.D. Program in which the student is enrolled, under the supervision of the assigned tutor and advisor. Research and teaching activity will be conducted at the Department or Institute where the contract is based.


The following is a list of the most common pre-doctoral scholarships:

1. Financial aids for university faculty training (FPU) | Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades

 

These are scholarships received once a year by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid to fund research training employment contracts up to a maximum of four years, for Ph.D. students in all research areas, whose aim is providing the National Higher Education System and Scientific Research with new teaching staff.
 

The scholarship awarding consists of two competitive stages. Scholarships will be awarded prior to the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year.
 

Application period now open from October 9 to October 29 (14:00 h.), 2018


The aid includes a work contract as a teaching assistant and covers Ph.D. monitoring fees (390€ according to the tuition fees established for the current academic year)

2. Financial aids for predoctoral training contracts 2018 (former FPI scholarships) | Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades

 

Scholarships received on an annual basis by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid to fund research training employment contracts up to a maximum of four years, offered by the National Sub-Programme for Training, which belongs to the National Programme for the Promotion of Talent and Employability within the framework of the Spanish National Plan for Scientifc and Technical Research and Innovation 2017-2020, which aims at increasing both the number of new doctors and their training quality.


Application period now open: October 9 to October 29 (15:00 h.), 2018.
 

This is a competitive call for applications. Scholarships will be awarded within 6 months from the date of last application call.


The aid covers a work contract as a research assistant and a €6,250 educational grant, which covers academic fees (Ph.D. monitoring fees, complementary training credits, subject-specific training and doctoral research skills training), and research visits.

3. UC3M Scholarships

Pre-doctoral research training scholarships


These scholarships are established by the Vice-chancellorship for Faculty at UC3M. Scholarship recipients join the UC3M departments and Ph.D.  programs on the basis of a research training contract.


There are two main application periods during the academic year:

  1.  April. These scholarships are awarded in July, with recipients joining the department in September;
     
  2.  October. These scholarships are awarded in January, with recipients joining the department in February.


These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The aid includes a work contract as a teaching assistant and cover Ph.D. monitoring fees (390€ according to tuition fees for the last academic year) as well as 6 credit fees for complementary or research skills training.

 

Current application period now open in October 2018. Application period: October 15 to 26.

Scholarships for predoctoral contracts funded by research projects

 

Scholarships awarded to doctoral thesis within the framework of UC3M research projects

There are two main application periods throughout the year:

  1.  April. Scholarships applied for in April are awarded in July. Recipients join the department in September.
     
  2.  October. Scholarships applied for in October are awarded in January. Recipients join the department in February.

The aid covers a work contract as a research assistant.

4. Industrial Ph.D. CAM Financial Aids

 

The objective of these financial aids is to promote an effective collaboration and transference of knowledge between the academic and corporate fields by fostering the recruitment of young researchers for the development of research projects. An Industrial Ph.D. degree will enable these students to join the companies once the financial aid has expired, thus contributing to a stronger research work and competitiveness of Madrid companies.

Current call was launched on June 14, 2018. Application deadline: July 4, 2018 (until 15:00 h., Spanish peninsular time)

These financial aids have a maximum duration of 3 years. Recipients are both the academic institution (receiving funds to cover tuition fees, acquisition of equipment, etc.) and the companies (as the Ph.D. candidate's employer).

La Caixa


Obra Social La Caixa announces scholarships for Ph.D. studies. 

The aid covers a work contract as a research assistant.

Fundación Carolina


Fundación Carolina offers scholarships which aim to obtain a Ph.D. degree, to citizens from any of the Latin American countries that make up the Latin American Community of Nations.  

Current open call: January 2018 (application deadline: April 2018)


The aid covers:
 

  • €1200 monthly grant for living costs (maintenance and accommodation)
  • 3 economy-class roundtrip plane tickets from the capital city of the beneficiary's country, one ticket per each academic year.
  • Academic fees (Ph.D. monitoring fees, complementary training credits, subject-specific training and doctoral research skills training)
  • Health insurance. Prescription drug coverage is not included.
