The preservation of analogue and digital audiovisual heritage is one of the greatest challenges to deal with today in the field of culture. Faced with the increasing worries of the experts on the subject, the demand of professionals of audiovisual preservation and restoration is growing. Due to the lack of academic official studies dedicated to cataloguing, preservation and restoration of audiovisual materials in our country, this master arises as a pioneer initiative. University Carlos III of Madrid and Filmoteca Española (the Spanish Film Institute) offer for the first time in Spain an educative program only available in foreign universities (in New York, Amsterdam or Buenos Aires) or institutions such as the George Eastman Museum in the United States.

    Archivo Audiovisual UC3M

Module about the selection, description, documenting and cataloguing of audiovisual archives. It covers the whole cycle of the managing of the audiovisual archive, since the election of which materials should be preserved to the different processes related to the organisation of the archive.

Module IV. Film Preservation (6 ECTS, Semester 1)
Coordinator: Mercedes de la Fuente (Filmoteca Española)

Module aimed at preserving and restoring audiovisual materials in photochemical film. It allows to study the different existing film formats and the measures and techniques available for their optimal preservation.

Module V. Preservation of Analogue Video (3 ECTS, Semester 1)
    Coordinator: Tony Hernández (UC3M)

Module centred on analysing and implementing the processes and techniques related to the preservation and restoration of the different formats of analogue video.

Module VI. Digital Preservation of Film and Video (9 ECTS, Semester 2)
Coordinator: Francisco Utray (UC3M) / Juanjo Carretero (Deluxe)

This modules studies in depth the proper precepts, methods and techniques of digital preservation of film and video and examines the diverse mechanisms that operate in the processes of digitalisation, making differences upon the materials to be digitalised and the different formulas and technologies involved in those processes.

Module VII. Presentation and Use of the Archive (6 ECTC, Semester 2)
Coordinator: Miguel Fernández Labayen (UC3M) / Luis Castrillo (Filmoteca Española)

This module analyses the diverse ways of presenting the archive, ranging from issues regarding programming, exhibition and public screening of its materials to the processes of digital retouching and post-production understood as ways of creating with the archive or re-reading it. Thus, this module offers a wide vision of the multiple lives an archive may have, once its materials have already been selected, ordered, preserved and restored.

Module VIII. Non-audiovisual Collections (3 ETCS, Semester 2)
Coordinators: Fátima García (UC3M) y Luis Castrillo (Filmoteca Española)

Module focused on the non-audiovisual materials related to cinema and television that exist as paratexts that complete our knowledge of these media. Specifically, it will examine the mechanisms of preservation concerning technology, graphic archives (posters, photographs, etc.) and documentary collections, understanding such documents as key elements of audiovisual archives.
