The Master of Engineering in Aircraft Systems Integration (MASI), sponsored by Airbus Group-Spain, has been specifically designed for recent graduate engineers, and working professionals who want to develop and lead projects of Systems Integration.

Our courses are given in English by internationally recognized experts in their fields coming from the key players in the aeronautical business, including industry, academia, government and regulators.

    Graduation of the sixth promotion

The MASI program comprise 90 ECTS credits including an industry-oriented Master´s Final Project.

Its modular presentation allows for part-time study with a flexible completion date taking between 1.5 and 3 years.

The MASI Program combines three basic elements.

    • Fundamentals (M1), to provide the basis, the support to understand the technologies, the methods, the requirement.
    • Generalization (M2), required to manage complexity and to understand the whole (systems thinking), and
    • Experimentation (M3), to move from abstraction to implementation, innovation, invention.

M1. Introductory Level (16.6 ECTS credits).

Courses in the Introductory Level provide the technical knowledge necessary to understand how the different aircraft’s systems work.

    • Introduction to Aircraft Systems Integration (2.4 ECTS)
Course Director: Daniel Izquierdo Gil (AIRBUS)
    • Fundamentals of Aeronautical Engineering (6.0 ECTS)
Course Director: Marcos Vera Coello (UC3M)
    • Onboard Electronics and Instrumentation (3.2 ECTS)
Course Director: Andrés Barrado Bautista (UC3M)
    • Aeronautical Communications (3.0 ECTS)
Course Director: Francisco J. González Serrano (UC3M)
    • Introduction to Aircraft Control (2.0 ECTS)
      Course Director: Concepción Monje (UC3M)

M2. Core Level (15.6 ECTS credits).

The Core level is aimed at providing the global systemic vision required to manage the large and complex aeronautic projects. The focus is on the procedures, methodologies, tools and agents common in all systems integration projects. It includes general courses like Systems Engineering or Project Management, and others more specific for the aeronautical context, but transversal in the integration processes.

    • Systems Engineering (3.2 ECTS).
Course Director: Fernando Mijares Gordún (AIRBUS)
    • Airborne Software and Hardware (3.0 ECTS)
Course Director: Ismael Lafoz Pastor (AIRBUS)
    • Aircraft Certification and Safety Analysis (3.0 ECTS)
Course Director: Javier Espinosa Arronte (AIRBUS) and Isabel Lozano Cagigao (AIRBUS)
    • Aeronautical Projects Management (1.6 ECTS)
Course Director: Rebeca Calvo Aguilar (AIRBUS)
    • Design and Configuration Management of Aircraft Systems (1.6 ECTS)
Course Director: Jesús López Ferrer (AIRBUS)
    • Aircraft Electromagnetic Compatibility (2.4 ECTS)
Course Director: David García Gómez (AIRBUS)
    • Data Engineering for the Digital Aircraft (0.8 ECTS)
Course Director: Antonio Artés Rodríguez (UC3M)

M3. Advanced Level (21.8 ECTS credits).

This module focuses on the integration of specific systems, like the Fuel, Hydraulic, Electric, Avionic Systems… The idea is to apply the general and common methods and tools to each aircfraft system, to each subsystem, part, etc.

    • Antennas Integration (1.4 ECTS)
Course Director: Luis E. García Castillo (UC3M)
    • General Systems (5 ECTS)
Course Director: Javier Yagüe López (AIRBUS)
    • Communication Systems (2.0 ECTS)
Course Director: Francisco Peña del Campo (AIRBUS)
    • Surveillance, Identification and Mission Systems (2.6 ECTS)
Course Director: Julio Gutiérrez Martín (AIRBUS)
    • Air Navigation Systems (2.2 ECTS)
Course Director: Agustín Gil-Martín Vilades (AIRBUS)
    • Presentation and Flight Information Systems (2.0 ECTS)

    • Unmanned Air Systems (1.6 ECTS)
Course Director: Alberto P. Martínez Borja (AIRBUS)
    • Seminars/Conferences/Labs (3.4 ECTS)
      Coordinator: Francisco J. González (UC3M)

M4. Practical Work (24 ECTS credits).

This module is designed to provide the students with the technical, professional and social skills needed to enter and/or develop an engineering career in the (aeronautical) systems engineering-related industry.

    Group Design Project (4 ECTS)
This module provides an introduction to intensive group project work in collaboration with an industrial or academic customer. The objective of the Group Design Project is to encourage both innovation and engagement with the broader engineering context (financial, economic, social, environmental). The use of ‘real world’ engineering problems requires students to actively engage with their customers to determine the scope and requirements of their project, in order to provide a realistic simulation of the sort of challenges that they are likely to face as engineering graduates.

    Internship Placement (20 ECTS)
The MASI program offers full-time paid internship opportunities at leader aerospace companies. During the internship period (min. 720 hour), the students will solve real integration problems under the supervision of a Company Mentor. In addition to the real-work experience, the internship period helps MASI students to create a network of contacts very useful for finding permanent employment in the aerospace industry.

Coordinators: Francisco J. González (UC3M) and Daniel Izquierdo Gil (Airbus Group)

M5. Final Project (12 ECTS credits).

The Final Project consists of the development of a complete system's integration project under the supervision of an industry or academic advisor. The project will make use of methods and tools learned in the MASI curriculum. The Final Project culminates in a written project report and an oral presentation.

Coordinators: Daniel Izquierdo Gil (AIRBUS) and Francisco J. González Serrano (UC3M)

MASI is aimed at professionals working in the aerospace industry (giving priority to Airbus Group employees of and subcontractors), and recent graduates (no work experience) in any branch of engineering related to the syllabus, namely.

    Fees for entry in MASI’18

The tuition fee for the MASI programme is €10,000.

In the last edition, for recent graduates Airbus offered scholarships which cover up to 50% of tuition fees of the MASI17 program.

    Payment Procedure

The tuition fee to be paid in three instalments:
    • 1,000 Euros as a “Reserved Place” payment, in the fortnight after the notification of final acceptance onto the Masters course.
    • A second payment of 4,500 Euros, until March 15th  of the academic year at the start of the Course.
    • A third and final payment of 4,500 Euros, until October 31th of the academic year.

Failure to pay tuition entails the rejection or cancellation of a student’s enrolment according to the terms established by the University.

Because of legal requirements, the expedition of degree diplomas and certificates is conditional upon the payments of all monies owed to the University.

    Sponsorship and company support

    Working Professionals.

Most students on the programme are self-financing, but about 50% are sponsored by their employers. Many companies recognise the benefits of an employee attending the MASI programme. One example is the Master’s Final Project, for which many MASI students carry out research and analysis into a particular area of interest to their sponsoring company.

Another important factor to obtain the employer's full support is the reduction in social security contributions (Royal Decree 395/2007 on Professional Employment training), and the credit provided by some public institutions (namely Fundación Tripartita in Spain) for granting workers individual leaves of absence for training. More information can be found by contacting the Human Resources Department of your company or in Tripartite Foundation.
