JePPIX PIC Design Course

The four PhD candidates successfully completed their training, gaining valuable insights into mode analysis to better understand the design space for waveguide-based integrated optics. They explored optimal approaches for constructing interferometers and filters, as well as the principles and practical implementation of active building blocks such as semiconductor optical amplifiers, modulators, and detectors. Additionally, they developed methods for circuit layout and studied both hybrid and monolithic integration schemes.
The program placed a strong emphasis on practical skills, allowing participants to work hands-on with
commercial CAD tools and process design kits under the guidance of expert designers and leading
academic instructors. Representatives from the foundries provided insights into the latest platform
capabilities, while visits to cleanroom facilities and measurement laboratories offered a deeper
understanding of fabrication tolerances and design-for-test methodologies. The training also covered
packaging considerations to ensure a comprehensive approach to design, testing, and manufacturing.
