Ioannis Stavrakakis


Ioannis Stavrakakis - National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece

Ioannis Stavrakakis is a professor in the Dept of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece) and served as its Chair in 2013-16. He has also held faculty positions with Northeastern University and the University of Vermont (USA), following the completion of his Ph.D. studies in 1988 at the University of Virginia (USA). His research interests are in networking: social, mobile, ad hoc, information-centric, delay tolerant and future Internet networking; network resource allocation algorithms & protocols, traffic management and performance evaluation; (human-driven) decision making in competitive environments.  He has authored over 230 publications and has been funded by USA-NSF, DARPA, GTE, BBN and Motorola (USA), Greek and European Union agencies. He has served on the editorial boards of the Proceedings of the IEEE, the ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking and Computer Communications journals among others. He is a visiting professor of UC3M and IMDEA Networks (Chair of Excellence Comunidad de Madrid, 2017-2018), a Mercator Fellow of the German Research Foundation-DFG and a Fellow of IEEE (since 2007).



The work will focus on research challenges on dynamic resource sharing in the context of the “5G Networking” related activities and in close collaboration with Prof. Arturo Azcorra group’s work at UC3M and the 5TONIC Laboratory. More specifically, innovative and efficient mechanisms will be studied for sharing the highly diverse and distributed (over space, time and operators) resources in 5G. The dynamic resource sharing will be designed to cope effectively with the anticipated immense traffic, support efficiently the various networking functions and enable the innovative applications foreseen under 5G. Resource pooling over diverse operators/owners will be considered to reduce costs and create economies through resource multiplexing, as well as enhance the overall delivered Quality of Experience (QoE). Strategies for cooperation will be considered, also factoring in the social layer and specifically human behaviors in competitive environments, ensuring that resource pooling brings sufficient benefits to the involved players.
