RESEARCH STAY AT UC3M: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

PROJECT: Modelling of high speed machining: multiphysics aspects of material flow and of dynamic friction. High speed machining generates severe loading conditions for the work material in terms of strain rate, strain and temperature. The goal is to analyze the viscoplastic flow instabilities which are frequently induced under these extreme loading conditions by thermomechanical coupling, thermal softening, recrystallisation and material damage. Effects of the thermomechanical characteristics of the work material on the frictional response of the tool chip interface will be also investigated. The outcome of this research is to advance the understanding of some fundamental aspects of machining processes and at last to reach the capability of optimizing these processes. Such capability is of great interest for improving the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry.
