Jean-François Botrel - Université Rennes 2 (FRANCE)

Jean-François Botrel holds an Honorary Doctorate from Exeter University, UK. He is Emeritus Professor of Hispanic Language and Cultures at the University of Rennes 2 where he has also held the positions of Rector (1982-1986), Vice-rector (1977-1980) and Professor of Spanish and Portuguese. Dr. Botrel also directed the Rennes Center for Initiation in Higher Teaching, was Education Ministry delegate in Corsica from 1990 to 1992, and was in charge of the National Institute for Pedagogical Research (1993-1996).

He is the author of over one hundred and fifty contributions to the contemporary cultural history of Spain, focusing especially on the history of books, the press and reading habits, ‘cordel’ and popular literature, the Restoration writers Galdós, Palacio Valdés, Padre Coloma, Valbuena and Clarín, Hispanism and literary history.

As a Hispanist he was a member (1989-1995), and then Vice-president, in 1998, of the International Association of Hispanists and has participated in numerous conferences.

Dr. Botrel also formed part of the Scientific Council of the Casa de Velázquez and was Director of the Rennes Research Center on Latin-American and Iberian Press. Among his many distinctions, he is Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite, in 1985, Commandeur des Palmes Académiques in 1998, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1999 and holds the Encomienda de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, awarded in 2005.

PROJECT: To study the specific incorporation methods used by Spain and the Spanish people during what was known as the "culture of the masses", from the Liberal Revolution up to the eve of the Civil War.
