Proyecto

CLOSEVU: Close View Visual Understanding

Visual perception is one of our main means to make sense of the world around us, especially when it comes to deal with interactions with other people (e.g. recognise emotion, recognise people we have seen before, read body language, infer intention, etc.). Understanding visual information is a major part of our learning and our daily lives, but it is so “natural” to us that we do it without much conscious thinking. In fact, we know relatively little about how visual processing is done by us and other living beings. This project aims to advance the state-of-the-art on how to recognise different human actions especially in situations where the sensors are close to the subjects. To focus the work, we use passenger behaviour in buses as a case study. There are also applications in robotics and assisted living. We collaborate with UCL (UK), Kingston University (UK) and INRIA (France).

CV

Prof. Dr. Sergio A Velastin was until recently a research professor at the University of Santiago de Chile and is now a UC3M Conex-Marie Curie Fellow (very experienced professor) in the Applied Artificial Intelligence Research Group at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. He trained and worked most of his life in the UK where he became Professor in Applied Computer Vision at Kingston University and where he was also director of the Digital Imaging Research Centre. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Senior Member of the IEEE where he was an elected member of the Board of Governors of the Intelligent Transportation Society (IEEE-ITSS). He is also an associate editor of the IET Computer Vision journal and has worked for many years in the field of artificial vision and its application to improve public safety especially in public transport systems. He co-founded Ipsotek Ltd and has worked, on projects with transport authorities in London, Rome, Paris etc in several EU Framework Programme projects.
