MODEA:  Advanced statistical data modeling of multi-stratum designs and their application

Design and analysis of experiments is one of the most important tools in scientific research, and it is an important aid to innovation in European and worldwide businesses, industries and sciences (applications can, for example, be found in the food industry, material science, semiconductors, robotics, medicine and biology). Better designed experiments will lead to reductions in the number of participants involved in clinical trials, savings in the amount of expensive components needed for others, decreases in the number of prototypes required in engineering experiments, and shorter product and process development times.

This project would develop new methodology for modeling data from designed experiments with restricted randomization to address challenges from several applied sciences. Specifically, the research would focus on variable and model selection for experiments where there are multiple levels of randomization or where some variables are harder to change and hence are reset less often. The developed methodology will allow the extraction of the maximum of information from the data.

CV

Before coming to the Carlos III University as a CONEX-Marie Curie Fellow of Statistics, Kalliopi Mylona was Lecturer in Statistics within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK. Previously, she was a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

She holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences from the National Technical University of Athens in Greece, and obtained a PhD in Statistics from the same university in 2009. After her PhD, she lectured postgraduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Piraeus, the Athens University of Economic and Business, and the National Technical University of Athens. 

Her main research areas are the design of factorial experiments and the analysis of experimental data, both the development of new statistical methodology and its application to real scientific problems. For example, she collaborates with the First Propedeutic Surgical Clinic at the Hippocratio Hospital in Greece and the Hellenic Trauma Society on Biostatistics problems. Other motivating applications include meta-analysis of clinical trials, materials and surface engineering, agricultural field experiments, and biological and chemical experiments.
