Description

SENER Aerospace has developed equipment for Space applications for more than 50 years. In Space, SENER Aerospace supplies essential items for completing successful missions, such as Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS) and Guidance, Navigation and Control systems (GNC), radiofrequency (RF) equipment, optical systems, Ground Support Equipment (GSE), microgravity and life support systems and mechatronics. For all these systems, the Company provides design, analysis, development, procurement, product assurance, assembly, integration, verification and test capabilities to integrate the hardware, software and firmware required to develop them.

SENER Aerospace has collaborated with UC3M for several years through different research projects. The creation of this Chair aims at consolidating and substantiating this collaboration in the long term, defining objectives on research, innovation, and education on new space systems.

Funding company:

SENER Aeroespacial

Duration:

From 14/03/2018 to 14/03/2022

Relationship with Department or Institute:

Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering

Brief description:

After a long and succesful collaboration in research and teaching tasks between Universidad Carlos III of Madrid and SENER Aerospace, both institutions decided to create in 2018 the UC3M-SENER Aerospace Chair, a new framework in which to continue and strengthen this relationship in a stable and effective way. The objective of the Chair is to establish the basis of continued collaboration in research tasks related to the development of aerospace equipment and systems. The Chair has an annual budget that allows carrying out a plan of activities set by its management and in which students of different degrees and masters of the UC3M, teaching and research staff from various departments, and SENER Aerospace staff interact. The selected work topics are unconventional, high risk, that present high disruptive potential in the aerospace sector.

On UC3M side, the following research groups participate in the Chair: The Aerospace Engineering Research Group (AERO), the Plasmas and Space Propulsion Team (EP2), the Communications and Systems Architecture Group (ARCOS), the Communications Group (GCOM), the Microelectronic Design and Applications Group (DMA), and the Optoelectronics and Laser Technology Group (GOTL).
Objetivo (en castellano y en inglés):
Investigación, innovación y educación en nuevos sistemas espaciales. // Research, innovation and education in new space systems.

Activities:

The Chair conducts research activities in a wide range of areas related to satellite and mission design and the development and verification of hardware and software.
The Working Groups of the UC3M-SENER Aerospace Chair are the following:

• Equipment testing through balloon flights.
• Attitude and Orbital Control Systems.
• Simulators for equipment verification.
• New trends in Systems Engineering.
• Embedded Software and Earth Segment.
• Communications: telemetry and telecommand.
• Electronic systems.
• Communications: photonics.

Depending on the needs of the work groups and the student initiative, the Chair organizes training workshops given by SENER Aerospace staff, UC3M professors, or by the students themselves.
