Professor Montserrat Abad Castelos

Professor of Public International Law at University Carlos III (since 2019). Graduate in Law (University of Santiago de Compostela, 1990). PhD/Law (Complutense University of Madrid, 1996). Associate Professor of Public International Law (A Coruña University, since 2000 and UC3M, since 2002. Deputy Legal Adviser at the International Legal Department, in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (2005-2009). Member of the CEDIH (Spanish Red Cross).

Her main fields of interest are international jurisdiction; civil society; terrorism; International humanitarian law; and energy. Her research has been carried out within the framework of around 30 competitive research projects, both national and European, and it has crystallised in more than 110 publications (including 11 books, 5 of them as a result of her entire personal authorship and 6 more as co-editor, co-director or coordinator). She has lectured, presented papers and delivered speeches for around 200 events, at congresses, seminars, conferences and other meetings. She has also participated in many and diverse activities connected with the transfer of research results through, among others, her participation in the Spanish Delegation in multiple international fora, in research contracts signed with different entities, and as a member of the board of examiners for the admissions to the Spanish Diplomatic Career. Together with stays carried out at the UN (New York, 1995 and Geneva, 2002), she also stayed as Visiting Fellow at foreign research centers as, among others, the IALS (London, 2001); BIICL (London, 2011); LUCSUS (University of Lund, Sweden, 2012); and the CELI of the University of Leicester (United Kingdom, 2018/19). She has been Secretary (2016) and Deputy Director (2017-18) of the UC3M’s Department of International law, Ecclesiastical law and Legal philosohpy.
