Constanza Tobío

Professor Constanza Tobío Soler

Constanza Tobío is Professor of Sociology at Carlos III of Madrid. She has been visiting professor at the universities of Rome, Bath, Bilbao and Montevideo, as well as at the C.N.R.S. in Paris. She has been Head of the Departament of Political Science and Sociology, and  Vice Dean of Sociology. She has been Director of the European Master on Politics and Society, and of the master in TransAtlantic Relationships. Prof. Tobío is currently Head of the Department of Social Analysis.

Her main research areas are gender, the family-employment relationship and care. Her book, Madres que Trabajan. Dilemas y Estrategias, based on research conducted along several years on working mothers’ strategies, received ex aequo the “María Ángeles Durán” award in 2006. She has published extensively on these topics in main sociological reviews, both Spanish and international (Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas, Revista Internacional de Sociología, Asparkía, Journal of Gender Studies, European Societies, Cahiers du Genre, Journal of Intergenerational Relationships, Papers de Sociología, Política y Sociedad, entre otras) as well as in other publications of general interest. Her research on lone mother families has been published both as a book (Las Familias Monoparentales en España (co-authored with Juan Antonio Fernández Cordón) and in several articles. The books Gendering Citizenship in Western Europe (2007), (co-authored with Ruth Lister, Fiona Williams et al.) and El cuidado de las personas. Un reto para el siglo XXI (2010), (co-authored with Silveria Agulló María Victoria Gómez María Teresa Martín Palomo) are broadly cited in sociological publications. Constanza Tobío has contrinbuted to Las Mujeres en la Gran Recesión (2015), edited by Cecilia Castaño, and to España 2015. Situación Social, edited by Cristóbal Torres and published by Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas, which has obtained the UNE award to the “Best book in Social Sciences 2015”.

She has been member of prestigeous editorial boards as European Societies, Política y Sociedad, Rétraite et Societé and  Revista Española de Sociología, and is currently a member of those of  Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas and Asparkía, as well as of the book collections Clásicos de la Sociología and Clásicos Contemporáneos, published by Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas Prof. Tobío has coordinated the Research Group “Sociology of Gender” in the Federación Española de Sociología, has been part of the Executive of the European Sociological Association, and of several European research networks like the TSER “Working and Mothering” and the RTN “Grandparenthood and Intergenerational Relationships”. She is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas.
