UC3M celebrates SDG Action and Awareness Week 2022

2/28/22

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), within the framework of the UGC (University Global Coalition) partnership and in collaboration with the State University of New York, will carry out several activities from the 28th of February to the 4th of March during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Action and Awareness Week 2022.

The aim of the event, organised by the UC3M Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Relations and Sustainable Development, is to promote awareness of the SDGs among the university community (students, faculty and administration and services staff) and invite them to take the initiative to comply with the SDGs at the university and in their communities.

This area includes the webinar organised by the Master in Sustainable Development and Global Governance-MASUS in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor's Office, on "ESDG Challenges: How to Integrate Multi-disciplinarity and Learning Innovations in the Education for the SDGs", which will take place on Thursday, 3rd of March at 5pm, with the participation of leading Spanish and international researchers, such as Thomas Maillart (University of Geneva), Fernando Valladares (CSIC) and Francesca Lipari (UC3M).

Furthermore, UC3M has invited other social partners to participate in activities, such as the Leganés City Council, the Spanish Committee of UNHCR, the Global Challenge Programme, Action Aid or YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe). They all focus on different aspects of sustainable development, such as the definition of a caring university, the prevention of racism and xenophobia in the university environment, the integration of the SDGs in global university networks and how to raise awareness in the university community about the importance of education or climate change, to name a few.

Adopted by the United Nations in 2015, the 17 SDGs set out a roadmap to address the world's most pressing challenges by 2030 and allow institutions to comprehensively approach sustainability and the fight against inequality and poverty. The 2030 Agenda is built on five fundamental dimensions, also known as the "5Ps": people, planet, partnership, peace and prosperity.

Founded in 2019 by an international group of university leaders, the University Global Coalition (UGC), of which UC3M is a member, is collaborating with the United Nations (through UNITAR) and with the International Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to incorporate the SDGs into teaching, research, management and leadership carried out by universities in partnerships with other political and social players. The UGC allows partner universities to share resources, initiatives and best practices to become global players with a comprehensive approach towards sustainability policies.
