Rector Elections at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

Juan Romo, Full Professor of Statistics and sole candidate for Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) Rector, obtained the following electoral results from the different university collectives. University Tenured Faculty, 231 votes in favor with 146 blank ballots; part-time professors, assistant professors, professors emeriti and visiting and affiliated professors, 96 votes in favor with 64  blank ballots; doctoral assistants, teaching assistants, research fellows and affiliated researchers, 37 votes in favor with 27 blank ballots; undergraduate students, 115 votes in favor with 663 blank ballots; graduate students, 28 votes in favor with 24 blank ballots; and administrative and service personnel, 72 votes in favor with 393 blank ballots.

The balloting was carried out with the weightings established in article 45 of the University Statutes: University Tenured  Faculty (54%), part-time professors, assistant professors, professors emeriti and visiting and affiliated professors (8%),doctoral assistants, teaching assistants, research fellows and affiliated researchers (10%), undergraduate students (15%), graduate students  (5%), and administrative and services personnel(8%).

Juan Romo (Madrid, 1959) earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics with Honors from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.  He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Texas A&M University. Romo carried out a postdoctoral stay at City University of New York, and was Associate Professor at the Complutense de Madrid and at UC3M, where he currently is Full Professor. He has been Vice-president of UC3M Graduate Studies, and Vice-president of UC3M Faculty and Departments.  President of the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) since September 2015, he has also been Vice-president of the Consejo de Universidades since September 2018. He has formed part of the Permanent Commission of the Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades Españolas (CRUE) since July 2018. Coauthor of four books, he has published articles in international research journals on complex high-dimensional and functional data analysis, big data, resampling, time series, extremes and outliers, with applications in genetics (microarrays and SNPs),financial data, and  networks and image analysis.
