Margarita Salas Falgueras (Canero, Asturias; 1938), pupil of Severo Ochoa, is one of the driving forces of Spanish research in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. Currently, she is an ad honorem professor at the Severo Ochoa Centre of Molecular Biology of Madrid on the Superior Counsel for Scientific Research (CSIC-UAM: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas). As well as having developed her research activity in a wide variety of scientific organisations and associations, she has been an academic at the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE: Real Academia Española) since 2003. In 2016 she became the first woman to receive the Echegaray Medal, awarded by the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences (Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales), and besides this award, she has received numerous prizes and distinctions, such as the Excellency Award in Chemistry, awarded in 2014 by the General Counsel for Official Chemistry Schools in Spain (Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales de Químicos de España).

The Lieutenant General Pascual Solís Navarro (Mazarrón, Murcia; 1947), in charge of setting up the Spanish Military Police University Centre (CUGC: Centro Universitario de la Guardia Civil), is a cum laude Doctor of Law, a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Spanish Military Police and co-author of the book Estudio de las Actuaciones de la Policía Judicial para proceso Penal (Study of the Actions of the Judicial Police for Criminal Proceeding.) This merit is added to a long list of awards, military as well as civil, among them the Grand Cross of Military Merit of the Spanish Military Police in 2014 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Naval Merit with White Decoration in 2008.

The ceremony will take place in the Magna hall on the Getafe Campus next Thursday 13th September. The laudation for Margarita Salas will be carried out by lecturer Juan José Vaquero, from the Department of Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering at the UC3M. On the other hand, the speech of praise for Pascual Solís will be given by lecturer Isabel Gutiérrez Calderón, vice-president for Studies at the UC3M. The inaugural lecture for the academic year 2018-2019 will be carried out by lecturer Manuel Palacio Arranz, from the department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the UC3M.
