This training seminar, held recently on the campus of Madrid-Puerta de Toledo of UC3M around the framework of the IV Edition of the International Volunteering Programme of the Public Universities of Madrid, was attended by 37 students who will make their university education available to the service of sustainable human development in different countries of America, Africa and Asia.

The programme, co-funded by the Community of Madrid, offers university students the opportunity to have an international volunteering experience, enriching their training from a service-learning perspective. As of 1 July, these 37 students will begin their stays, of three or six months, in Argentina, Benin, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, India, Mali, Morocco, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Uganda and Uruguay.

In the case of UC3M, the selected students will go to Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Uganda and will take care of areas of action related to eco-technologies, Human Rights research, digital training of young people, audiovisual ethnography and the management of production chains.

The seminar was opened by the Deputy Vice-Rector of International Relations and Cooperation of UC3M, Lourdes Rubio, together with the Deputy Director General of Volunteering, International Cooperation and Corporate Social Responsibility of the Community of Madrid, Cristina Pérez and the Vice-Rector of Social Responsibility Policies and University Outreach of the University of Alcalá, María Jesús Such.

During the two days, different aspects of international volunteering were discussed, such as the implications of participating in these initiatives, new approaches to sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda, the inter-cultural approach and on-the-ground health councils, among other things. In addition, there was an opportunity to share the first-person experiences of participants from previous editions.

In the last ten years, more than 200 students of the UC3M have enjoyed mobility assistance for carrying out volunteering, research or academic work in developing countries. Currently, there are two international mobility and volunteering programmes with developing countries of the UC3M: the Mobility Programme in Cooperation Group Projects and the International Volunteering Programme of the Public Universities of Madrid.
