Science Weekend

UC3M at the 2018 Finde Científico

From the 11th to the 13th May at MUNCYT

5/7/18

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) will take part in the 2018 Finde Científico from 11th to 13th May. It is one of the region of Madrid’s annual events of note in the field of scientific communication, collectively organised by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT), with a contribution from the Social Fund “La Caixa”.

The Finde Científico is a science festival for everybody, where educational centres, museums, universities and research centres all participate with the aim of promoting the scientific culture and bringing science and society closer together in a fun, educational, recreational and family environment.

This event, which takes place at the MUNCYT in Alcobendas, will have more than 200 workshops, demonstrations, and games to learn about science and technology. Students from a wide range of Madrid schools will showcase the activities developed at school and will be able to discover and learn about different scientific and technical concepts through experiments, simulations and multimedia presentations.

UC3M – a collaborative institution

UC3M is among the forty Spanish institutions taking part in organising this annual science festival. At the UC3M stand, and under the slogan “Siente la innovación” (“Feel the innovation”), you can enjoy various interactive activities related to R&D&I which is developed at the university.

Those who want to learn how television news reporters work will be able to attend a workshop on Friday 11th which will recreate how to form a direct connection from a central location in Madrid. From here at UC3M’s own stand, the attendees will learn about different events based on the teleprinters of local Madrid branch of Agencia EFE.

Throughout the Finde Científico the UC3M stand will be using two machines used for industrial design, which were developed in the UC3M MAQLAB: one 4D hologram booth and one large-scale 3D printer. In the former you will be able to see and move a three-dimensional hologram to learn how it is designed and simulate implementing a component of a motorcycle, for example. In the latter installation you will be able to see how pieces are manufactured in real-time through fused deposition modelling, a small-scale manufacturing procedure for prototypes.

On Saturday 12th there will be a workshop to learn how to make samaras (a species of seed) fly like small autogyros, discovering the autorotation mechanisms which are used in aerospace engineering and which can also be seen in nature.

Finally, on Sunday there will be a workshop for attendees to compose their own music. They will be able to record the sound of an electric guitar through a computer, and subsequently learn to modify that sound to get musical effects which are impossible to get at a live concert. Because the sound of a guitar is art, but also engineering.
