UC3M releases new research report

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has released its 2015-2016 Research Report, which includes the main parameters of the R&D&I that the institution carries out. In addition to the data on these two years, the report compiles information about research activity in the last five years.

La UC3M presenta su nueva Memoria de Investigación

This new edition of the report is presented in multimedia format, with a version in English and abundant audiovisual material (56 videos). The information is structured so that the numbers on the University and the results of each of the departments can be accessed. To make it easy to read, there are graphs that help interpret the data relative to the different chapters, such as funding obtained, publications by professors, theses read, mobility of teaching and research personnel and R&D transfer. The following are some of the main conclusions that can be drawn regarding UC3M R&D&I:

More than 7,000,000 euros in contracts with companies

The contracting of scientific and technological work by companies is one of the main channels of funding for R&D&I carried out by universities. In 2016, the number of contracts and funding obtained through this channel at UC3M increased from 2015, reaching more than 7,000,000 euros. Half of this funding comes from assessment contracts.

This positive trend began in 2014, which was the first year contracting with companies grew after the economic crisis. In 2015, the total volume of funding received through these contracts, processed by the Research Service, surpassed 6,000,000 euros, which was a six-percent increase from the previous year. The number of contracts signed also increased in 2015 from 2014 by 17%.

Fifty European research projects and seven ERCs

UC3M is very active in the European Horizon 2020 program. In fact, it occupies 15th place in Spain for return obtained in this program, according to the latest report presented by the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI). At the regional level, UC3M is in fifth place in Madrid and second among universities.

UC3M has 50 projects approved in H2020, nine of which it coordinates (data from August 2017.) The University stands out especially in the Leadership pillar and, in particular, in the area of ICT, for both the number of proposals presented and the success of the same. In addition, UC3M is the coordinator in 18% of the proposals presented. The University already has seven ERC projects funded by the European Research Council through the H2020 Excellent Science program, whose main evaluation criterion is scientific excellence. All together, these projects receive about ten million euros in funding.

Improving creation of technology-based companies

In 2016, UC3M participated in the social capital of three of its spin-offs: Sensia Solutions, S.L., Laboratorio Hipermedia, S.L. and Power Smart Control, S.L. In doing so, it became a temporary and minority shareholder to develop their function of technology transfer.

In addition, the Business Incubator of the UC3M Science Park (a program for the creation and consolidation of technology-based companies) has been recognized as an incubation node of the European Space Agency and serves eight of the 14 beneficiary ESA BIC companies in the Autonomous Region of Madrid.

Total invoicing of companies incubated by the UC3M increased 25 million euros (by the close of 2016), which amounts to an increase of 16% from the previous year. Investment in the R&D of these companies reached 5.5 million euros, resulting in four new patent applications and two patents granted. Jobs generated by the companies increased 8% from the previous year, employing 300 workers, a third of whom are involved in R&D activities. The companies have also carried out activities that have contributed to improving employability of UC3M students.
