Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has awarded 77 scholarships to incoming students with the best entrance marks as part of the Talento program, which has an endowment of more than 100,000 euros and is jointly subsidized with funds from the University and the Banco Santander through Santander Universidades.

The goal of this program, which came into effect this academic year 2017-18, is to recognize student  effort and excellence in academic achievement.

The diploma award ceremony for students who received the scholarships took place today at the Aula Magna on the Getafe campus. In attendance, among other University officials, were Luisa González-Cuellar, UC3M Vice-Rector for Students, Social Responsibility and Equality, and Susana García Espinel, the Managing Director of Santander Universidades and Universia España.

“We have strengthened this program, going from 45 to 77 scholarships, to benefit more incoming students who can study their first year at university with less economic pressure. It is also a way to reward the effort they made in their high school studies,” said González-Cuellar. “From the University and with the collaboration of the Banco Santander, we work on projects like this one so that our students continue to improve their academic record in an environment conducive to personal growth and development.”

“On behalf of the Banco Santander and myself, I want to convey to you the honor it is to be here today, supporting this kind of initiative that values and recognizes the effort and excellence of these 77 students,” said García. “At the Banco Santander, we have for years believed that the best future investment is investment in education. Universities have a leading role in the progress of society, so we are convinced the best social investment we can make is to support the university.”

The application consists of two categories: the Acceso UC3M scholarships, 50 scholarships of 1,000 euros for students who have the best UC3M entrance marks coming from any autonomous region; and the Destino UC3M scholarships, 27 scholarships of 2,000 euros for moving and accommodation of top students from outside the autonomous region of Madrid.

The Acceso scholarships were awarded to students with admission scores higher than 13.50, while the Destino grants went to students with admission scores higher than 12.90. The students’ family unit income was also considered in the awarding of the scholarship. The students who received them come from 12 autonomous regions in Spain.

The beneficiaries of the scholarship will join the Tutorías entre Compañeros (Buddy Tutoring) Program. Through this UC3M program, first-year students have the support of an upperclassman who accompanies and tutors them so that they quickly adapt to university life. As of their second year, they will participate in the program as tutors, helping new students with their experience.

Support from the Banco Santander to this grant program stems from the relationship it has maintained with UC3M since 1999 to develop this and other academic projects.
