The investiture will take place on the occasion of the opening ceremony the University’s academic year 2017-2018. It will be led by University Rector Juan Romo, and held at the Aula Magna of the Getafe campus on Thursday, September 7. The laudatio for Beard will be delivered by Jaime Alvar, professor of Ancient History and director of the UC3M Julio Caro Baroja Institute of Historiography.

Beard (Shropshire, 1955) is at present one of the most well-known specialists and populizers on antiquity. “She is without a doubt one of the most prestigious researchers in the field of Classical Studies for her sharp critique of sources and her efforts to integrate the production of classical authors and modern historians in the ideological and social context,” Alvar observed.

The British researcher is very popular because of her deep involvement in dissemination, her regular appearance in the media and her work as a narrator of documentaries about the classical world. She has received numerous awards and honors, among them the 2016 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences.
