Cursos de Estudios Hispánicos

What are the Cursos de Estudios Hispánicos?

The Cursos de Estudios Hispánicos (Courses in Hispanic Studies or CEH) is an academic program that strives for excellence and that is intended to provide students studying abroad with the opportunity to study the language, history, art, and other aspects of Spanish culture. At the same time this program offers a variety of courses in the Social Sciences, also taught in Spanish, on current topics that affect Spanish and European society, politics, and economics.  This combination of courses in different disciplines provides students with the possibility of learning about Spain from diverse perspectives.

The CEH program promotes the study of Spanish through language courses pitched to different levels or profiles (high intermediate, advanced, high advanced, superior, writing workshop, and Spanish for heritage speakers).  Students can also take direct-enrollment courses (courses with Spaniards), and participate in cultural activities (e.g., theater and music) and sports on campus, all of which help them to integrate better into college life in Spain, making their academic experience more authentic and rich.

This program, founded almost 20 years ago to meet the academic needs of students from U.S. universities, offers students the unique opportunity to study in seminar-format courses in which participation and debate are key elements. By this means students can develop their ability to think critically and read analytically in Spanish.

Students come from some of the most prestigious American universities. Some of the institutions associated with the UC3M include The Johns Hopkins University, The University of California, and the consortial program of Vassar College and Wesleyan University (which also brings students from Columbia and Harvard), Washington University in St. Louis, Marist-Stetson and Boston College, Duke University and the organizations CIEE and International Studies Abroad.
