The A4U Universities improve their position in international rankings

The Alianza 4U (4 universities) has recently published a report detailing the evolution of research activities during the period 2010 to 2014 of the four public universities which make up the Alianza 4U: Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAJavier María Donézar Díez de UlzurrunB), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), and Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (UPF).
The report highlights the outstanding position of the A4U Universities in international rankings (ARWU, QS and THE) in scientific output in general as well as in specific fields. In addition, it reveals competitiveness as being a strong point of the Alianza Universities, which obtained 17% of the European Framework and Horizon 2020 programmes for all of the SUE -Sistema Universitario Estatal (Spanish University System) with an average of 3.3 projects per 100 professors, versus that of .056 for the Spanish University System.
The A4U Universities represent 17% of the Spanish University System in the Web of Science and 22% of its research impact. Additionally, these institutions have obtained higher rates of citation per document than the Spanish University System average (9.7 versus 7.4), which brings to light the quality and visibility of A4U scientific output.
Furthermore, the budget settlement corresponding to A4U R+D did not change discernably in 2012 and 2013, although it can be observed that investment in R+D rose in this last year in the Catalan universities while decreasing for the Madrid universities.
This report was based on various sources of information to obtain indicators on certain aspects linked to the research activity of the Alianza 4U Universities, such as economic resources, competitiveness, excellence, scientific and technological output, visibility in international rankings, and researcher training.
