Horizon 2020

What is your goal?

The main strategic goals of Horizon 2020 are:

  • To create excellent science which will strengthen the EU's position on the world scientific scene
  • To make Europe a more attractive place for investing in research and innovation
  • Research the major issues affecting European citizens

Horizon 2020 will contribute to the construction of an economy based on knowledge and information throughout the Union, mobilising additional funding sufficient for research, development and innovation. In this way it will support application of the Europa 2020 strategy and other Union Policies as well as the creation and operation of the European Research Area (ERA)

Horizon 2020 will also be assisted by the Joint Research Centre or JRC (which will provide scientific and technical assistance to Union Policies) and  the European Institute of Innovation and Technology -or EIT (which will contribute to integration of the triangle formed by research-innovation-education).

How will it be structured?

  • Excellent Science: Strengthen and increased excellence of the scientific base of the Union as well as establishing the European Research Area in order to make the Union research and innovation system more competitive on a global scale.
  • Industrial leadership:Accelerate development of the technologies and innovations which support businesses of tomorrow and help innovative small and medium sized enterprises to become world leaders in their field.
  • Social challenges:This part responds directly to the political priorities and social challenges described in the Europa 2020 strategy. It aims to stimulate the critical mass of research and innovation endeavours required to attain the political goals of the Union.
