UC3M in Generation Study Abroad program from USA

2/24/16

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is in the group of the first Spanish universities to join the Generation Study Abroad program, an initiative of the Institute of International Education (IIE) in the United States. The goal of the program is to double the number of students from the U.S. who study abroad by 2020.

Generation Study Abroad

The Generation Study Abroad Program seeks to interest companies, governments, associations and institutions of higher learning in offering the chance to study abroad to students who have yet to do so.  To reach its goal, it has obtained the commitment of more than 500 universities in the U.S. and other universities from countries willing to increase the number of international students on their campuses.

Until 2016, there had not been a Spanish university in the Generation Study Abroad Program. “This is why gaining admission to this program is not only an international honor but also a challenge,” said Álvaro Escribano, director of the Carlos III International School (C3IS). UC3M has committed to significantly increasing the number of students from the U.S. for academic year 2019-20.

In turn, the IIE will make UC3M visible in the United States, as the University will take part in annual meetings, web seminars and special events, and will be provided with tools and resources to support contact and collaboration among participating universities. “This international recognition will help give more exposure to our University overseas and will help our strategic positioning in relation to students from the U.S., whether they are high school, undergraduate or graduate students,” Escribano pointed out.

The IIE is a world leader in the exchange of people and ideas, and it has worked on behalf of the U.S. government to increase opportunities to study abroad, such as in the Fulbright Program.
