The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has prepared a program of activities focused on the relationship between science and fiction to celebrate the European Night of the Researchers of Madrid 2019, an event of scientific divulgation for all audiences that will take place on Friday the 27th of September. To attend the activities, a place must be booked online at:  www.uc3m.es/nocheinvestigadores.

On that day, in the morning, a theatrical show aimed at secondary education centres will take place in the Auditorium on the Leganés campus of the UC3M. This event explores the relationship between science and art through various presentations by researchers from the UC3M and artist Cris Blanco’s show, “Science Fiction”, a blend of concert and performance conference with a reflection on science and fiction.

In the evening, at 7:30pm on the UC3M’s Madrid-Puerta de Toledo campus, an interdisciplinary round table entitled “Science and Fiction: crossed destinies, from Georges Méliès to Blade Runner 2044” will be held. During this discussion, different issues related to science fiction, not just from the strictly cinematographic point of view, but also from a socio-political dimension will be explored.

In addition, between 6pm and 9pm, participants can take part in a series of workshops carried out by R+D+I European Project teams of the UC3M that cover topics ranging from mobile communications of  the future with 5G to the revolution in the world of 3D printing. They will also touch on how cinema reflects aero spatial engines and the impact that science fiction films have on research and scientific imagination.

These actions are part of the European Night of the Researchers of Madrid, an event that includes numerous free activities of scientific divulgation and that has been celebrated in 340 cities simultaneously across Europe since 2005. In Madrid, this project is promoted by the Council of Education and Research under the coordination of the Knowledge Foundation Madri+d and boasts funding from the European Union within the Horizon 2020 Program of research and innovation, under the actions of Marie Sklodowska-Curie, in accordance with grant agreement number 818,528. Its principal objectives are: to allow citizens to get closer to the role of researcher and get to know their work and the benefits it has for society; to encourage scientific vocations among students and promote the entrepreneurial spirit.
