UC3M and Banco Santander announce Chairs of Excellence for 2018- 2019

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and Banco Santander, through Santander Universidades, have launched the 11th call for their Chairs of Excellence. These fellowships are designed to promote researching excellence through the incorporation of professors and researchers affiliated with an international university or research center of renowned prestige.

Attraction of talent is one of the priorities of UC3M, in accordance with its Strategic Plan. The purpose of these UC3M-Santander Chairs of Excellence is to foment incorporation of internationally renowned professors into research groups with the goal of creating synergies and generating collaborations. Candidates must be endorsed by the head of a UC3M department, institute or research group.

For academic year 2018-2019, 10 half-year grants worth 60,000 euros each have been announced. In addition, two reciprocal quarterly grants  are being offered, associated with the stay of a UC3M  professor PhD at the beneficiary’s center of origin for the same period. The application deadline, which is carried out on-line, is November 30th, 2017.

UC3M and Banco Santander signed the first agreement to create Universidad Carlos III de Madrid - Banco Santander Chairs of Excellence program in 2007. Since then and after successive renewals and expansions, 171 Chairs of Excellence have been awarded, distributed in 10 yearly calls.

Thanks to these calls, researchers from universities, science institutes and research organizations of international prestige such as the Max Planck Institute, the London School of Economics, Boston University, the University of California, the University of Cambridge, the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, the University of Paris and Stanford University have been incorporated. As a result, international ties between the institutions have strengthened, scientific and technical capacities have improved and stable collaborations have been created through the sharing of teaching and research experiences.

UC3M is among the 50 best universities in the world under fifty years old, according to the QS Rankings. It is the first university in Spain in attracting top academic students and for the percentage of its students who carry out international mobility stays, according to the CRUE. It also stands out for the high rate of its graduates’ employability (around 90%) and for having more than 5,800 internship agreements with top companies and institutes of reference.

Banco Santander invests in education more than any other company in the world (Varkey/UNESCO-Fortune 500 Report). Through Santander Universidades, it has more than 1,100 collaboration agreements with universities and academic institutions in 21 countries, and through the Universia network, gathers more than 1,300 Ibero-American academic institutions.
