The event, which took place in Brussels (Belgium), began with talks from the president of YERUN and rector of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Juan Romo, and the Eurodeputy and co-president of the European Parliament work group for the Horizon 2020 (H2020) program, Soledad Cabezón. Also, professor Tom van Veen, from Maastricht University (the Netherlands), explained the position of YERUN with regard to the Ninth Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Innovation for the European Union. This will follow H2020.

YERUN believes adequate support of human capital is essential for future generations of European researchers and innovators. Consequently, it considers it a priority to support researchers at the beginning of their professional career. In addition, the members of YERUN are committed to promoting Open Science, which requires not only infrastructures and skills, but also a cultural change within and outside of the academic world.

During the event, there was also a panel of YERUN experts who presented the impact of its participation in the H2020 program, with representatives from the universities of Antwerp (Belgium), Brunel (the United Kingdom), Dublin (Ireland), Maastricht (the Netherlands), Pompeu Fabra (Spain) and Ulm (Germany).

Eighteen young and prestigious universities

The YERUN consists of universities that are less than 50 years old and hold a noteworthy position in rankings of international prestige. This network, established in 2015, promotes joint actions between universities in the field of research and teaching, in addition to encouraging mobility. Its goal is to promote collaborative research in fields and projects of high social impact, encourage academic exchange and establish joint Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. programs.

The YERUN is made up of 18 universities: Bremen, Konstanz and Ulm (Germany); Antwerp (Belgium); Southern Denmark (Denmark); Autónoma de Barcelona, Autónoma de Madrid, Carlos III de Madrid and Pompeu Fabra (Spain); Eastern Finland (Finland); Paris Dauphine (France); Dublin City University (Ireland); Universidad de Roma Tor Vergata (Italy); Maastricht (the Netherlands); Nueva de Lisboa (Portugal); Brunel and Essex (the United Kingdom) and Linköping (Sweden).
