Music Cities Forum, a Space for Reflection about Music and Cities

6/20/16

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and the Legal Music Foundation are organizing the first Music Cities Forum. The Forum is a space for discussing the role that music plays in the social, economic and cultural context of cities. This event has the support of the Directorate of Cultural Programs and Activities, a division of the Madrid Government Department of Culture and Sports, and Acción Cultural Española (Spanish Cultural Action).

Foro de las Ciudades Musicales, un espacio de reflexión sobre la música y la ciudad

The forum will be held on June 22nd and June 23rd in the assembly hall of the Conde Duque Cultural Center. Its goal is to bring together, from an international perspective, collections of citizens’ experiences, private projects and institutional programs to implement strategic planning for the development of local music in urban settings.

Representatives of the main Music Cities will take part in the Forum, along with artists, academics and key agents from the Spanish music industry. They will discuss and debate the role of the music industry in the context of cities. Ignacio Gallego, UC3M professor in the Department of Journalism and Audiovisual Communication and organizer of the event, said, “It is necessary for the creative musical processes that exist in Madrid to emerge and be given more visibility so that citizens can participate in their creation and at music can be more sustainable, diverse and accessible.”

Attendance at the forum of these national and international figures in music has been confirmed: Sylvie Durán, Costa Rican Minister of Culture; Dan Seligman, director of Pop Montreal; Ventura Barba, managing director of SONAR Barcelona; and Hanna Brooks, music business consultant from Melbourne, Australia.

Daniel Granados, programmer of the Forum and executive coordinator of Pla de cultures de Barcelona 2016-2026 states, “The Forum has a starting point of understanding music as a special cultural field, in which through collective creation and listening, unique common sociability frameworks are produced. We will deal with practical sessions, experiences and concrete policies which will make us think about the role of music as a social as well as economic phenomenon from different perspectives”.

Those interested in attending the talks and roundtable discussions can pre-register free of charge on the web site of the event. The convention is part of Madrid Music City (MMC 2016), a cultural project that will run in the capital from 21-25 June, featuring different cross-disciplinary activities.

The Music Cities Forum is a follow-up to the International Seminar on Changes in the Independent Music Sector held at the UC3M in 2011, and complements the line of research carried out in the Master’s in Music Industry and Sound Studies.
