Academic vocation

Estudiante en biblioteca

There are moments in the life of any university student in which doubts can arise about the convenience of the course or whether or not to continue with the studies they have chosen.

Vocation is a complex subject in which a multitude of personal, family, social or professional variables come into play. You have to decide what you want to study, bearing in mind other factors such as the entry grade, economic resources, etc.

If you find yourself in this situation, we suggest the following action plan for making the best decision in a calm and thoroughly conscious manner.

If, after reading the information on the web page and having carried out some introspection, you wish to book an appointment with our psychologists, you can do so via the following link:

Know your abilities

Tablet

Be aware of your personal abilities: skills, attitudes and interests. You possibly already have the results of the questionnaires and tests that you took for GCSE and A-level. Look over them again and try to see what your main strengths and weaknesses were. It is possible that they will highlight some professional areas that fit more to your strengths. Look at your A-level results and see which subjects you stood out in and which you found a lot more difficult to study for.
In addition, you can fill out the questionnaire.

Degree assessment

Subjectively assess each Degree subject on an interest scale of 0 to 10. What is the average mark of the whole Degree? If the Degree fails or narrowly passes, you will find it difficult and demotivating to study it. If the Degree rates higher than 7, it is probable that you will be motivated to study it and will enjoy doing so. Degree offers

Career prospects assessment

You can look at the graduation profile on the degree page and check with the Guidance and Employment Service.
It is useful to talk to someone who has already studied the Degree (family, family friends, personally known lecturers).

Imagine executing these possible jobs and how it makes you feel. How do you imagine yourself working in them? Do you feel happy with these positions?
Your studies will last a few years (between 4 and 7 years approximately), but your working life will last around 40 years. The work phase will take up a large part of your life.

If your abilities (aptitudes, attitudes, skills and interests) are adequate for the chosen Degree, you like the curriculum and, in addition, you can imagine yourself working well in one of the career prospects thereof, it is highly likely that you have chosen the best studies for you. If so, your doubts will begin to vanish.
