Detection of Cases

Procedures to follow for detection and notification of cases of SARS-CoV-2 at UC3M

In line with the strategy established by the Spanish Health Ministry, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has specific procedures set up for early detection, tracking and controlling the spread of COVID-19 for the different University Community collectives:  faculty and researchers, administrative and services staff, and undergraduate and graduate students.

Compliance is mandatary for the entire University Community to ensure early detection of active infection by SARS-CoV-2 and the establishment of the necessary control measures to prevent new infections.

DETECTION OF CASES AMONG FACULTY AND RESEARCHERS PDI / PAS

IF YOU BEGIN TO HAVE SYMPTOMS AND YOU ARE NOT AT THE UNIVERSITY

  • Stay at home,  going out as little as possible, avoid contact with other household members, and if possible, use a room solely for yourself until receiving instructions from the healthcare services.
  • Contact your primary healthcare center or healthcare provider if you are an employee belonging to MUFACE, as soon as possible.
  • Notify the University about your situation:

By calling the University Medical Service of the Occupational Health and Safety Center (during office hours) or sending an email to infocovid19@uc3m.es with basic information to allow the Medical Service to proceed with identification and contact: Last name and first name, Department, Institute or Service, identification of office used,  and, especially a telephone number where you can be reached.

IF YOU BEGIN TO HAVE SYMPTOMS WHILE YOU ARE AT THE UNIVERSITY

  • Contact the University Medical Service of the Occupational Health and Safety Center (during office hour)s or send an email to: infocovid19@uc3m.es  with basic information that will allow the Medical Service to proceed with identification and contact: Last name and first name, Department or Service, identification of office, and especially a phone number where you can be reached.
  • Notify your Head of Service or the Director of your Department/Institute.
  • Leave the University.

If your symptoms are mild, go home and from there contact your primary healthcare physician or your healthcare provider if you belong to MUFACE.

If your symptoms are mild, but you are not able to go home by your own means, you should go to the isolation room set up for this purpose.  When you are able, you should go home, and from there contact your primary healthcare physician or your healthcare provider if you belong to MUFACE.

If you are experiencing severe symptoms, the University emergency number 9999 should be called immediately to initiate contact protocol with the 112 service.

Isolation spaces have been set up on the campuses for those individuals who have symptoms and are unable to go home by themselves, where they can wait until someone can come to accompany them.  These rooms are for individual use only and are equipped with proper ventilation, a waste bin for used masks (if replacement is necessary) and disposable tissues.  This room will be ventilated, cleaned and disinfected after each use.

PROCEDURE FOR USING THE ISOLATION SPACES

In order to access the spaces it is first necessary to call the University emergency number 91 624 99 99. A security guard will come to the indicated place to open the space so that the affected individual can wait there.  

The Covid-19 isolation rooms on the Campuses where individual with symptoms should go are located at: on the campuses where symptomatic individuals should go are located at:

  • Getafe Campus. Foronda Building.  Office 7.0.02.
  • Leganés Campus. Auditorium. Room 5.0 C 11, next to the parking lot entrance.
  • Colmenarejo Campus. Miguel de Unamuno Building. Classroom 1.B.16.
  • Madrid-Puerta de Toledo Campus. Classroom 1.B.20

DETECTION OF CASES AMONG STUDENTS

IF YOU BEGIN TO HAVE SYMPTOMS AND YOU ARE NOT AT THE UNIVERSITY

  • Stay home and do not come to University, avoid going out as much as possible and being in contact with other household members, and if possible, use one sole room for yourself until receiving instructions from the healthcare services.
  • Contact your primary healthcare center.
  • Notify your professors of your situation if the doctor orders you to self-isolate. 

Medically prescribed self-isolation is considered a justifiable cause for not attending classes, when corresponding justification is provided, including diagnostic tests, tracing notice indicating the mandatory self-isolation order, healthcare center recommendation, etc.

IF YOU BEGIN TO HAVE SYMPTOMS WHILE YOU ARE AT THE UNIVERSITY

  • Leave the University. You cannot resume academic activity until your situation is evaluated by a healthcare professional.
  • Contact your primary healthcare center.

If your symptoms are mild, go home and contact your primary healthcare center or healthcare provider in the case of employees belonging to MUFACE.

If your symptoms are mild, but you are not able to go home by your own means, go to the isolation space set up for this purpose.  As soon as it is possible, go home and contact your primary healthcare physician. 

In cases where symptoms are severe or if you need help in getting to the isolation space, the University emergency number 91 624 99 99  should be called immediately which, when applicable, will initiate contact protocol with the 112 service.

You cannot return to the Campus until your self-isolation period is over.  

IF YOU TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE A CLOSE CONTACT AT THE UNIVERSITY

You should contact your primary care center of reference to receive the precise instructions and you should not go to the university if you are obliged to quarantine.

In the event that you already have the complete vaccination schedule, have had a SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by PDIA in the previous 180 days and are asymptomatic, it is not necessary to quarantine and you will be able to continue attending classes. We recommend that you avoid contact with vulnerable people, wear a mask in your social interactions, do not attend mass events and monitor the possible appearance of compatible symptoms; If these appear, you should immediately contact your primary care center.
