Project

"Pol.Ar.Iber.A.: Handwritten  and Printed Tradition of Politics by Aristotle in the Iberian Area"

The research  project entitled “Handwritten and Printed Tradition of Politics by Aristotle in the Iberian Area” aims at looking into the complex relationship among intellectuals, men of letters, philologists  and  politicians between the 13th and 17th century: manuscripts, comments, printed editions, translations are all involved in the rediscovery of a text of basic importance in the history of western thought. The research is interested in finding out the methods with which Aristotle’s text  might have influenced the European civilization between the Middles Ages and the Modern age, by giving the main rules of political life but reflecting also the different cultural and historical demands. Politics was transcribed, translated, annotated, but also rewritten, adapted, supplemented because the text by Aristotle, if appropriately integrated, could better answer the requests of the age. The understanding of all these cultural phenomena could allow to give a contribution to the history of the European political thought and to the critical edition of the Aristotelian text (both in the Greek original and in the old Latin versions).
