Professor Manuel Hidalgo Trenado

Manuel Hidalgo holds a PhD in Political Science from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Diploma in Political Science and Constitutional Law from the Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies in Madrid. He is currently Professor of Political Science in the Department of Social Sciences at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

He has been a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University (California), a visiting researcher at the European University Institute in Florence, at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), at several Venezuelan institutes and universities, and at the Universidad del Andes in Bogotá. He has also taught at New York University and the Universidad Externado de Colombia. He is an International Exchange Alumni of the Department of State (USA).

His research interests cover a variety of topics, among others: international politics, comparative politics, geopolitics, political ecology, state-society relations, and elections and democratisation (with particular emphasis on Latin America - Venezuela). He is the author of a large number of articles and book chapters in his areas of specialisation.

His teaching, research and academic management activities at UC3M are complemented by his participation in international election observation missions, through organisations such as the OSCE, the OAS and the EU.
