UC3M awarded for most innovative project with its University Smart Card

Gold USC 2017

4/3/17

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has been awarded the Gold USC (University Smart Card- TUI in Spanish), which recognizes the most innovative and effective project for the university community in this area. UC3M received the award at the Fifth International University Smart Card Congress, held in Warsaw (Poland) on March 30th and 31st. The Congress was organized by the Banco Santander and the Universidad de Murcia International University Smart Card Observatory with the collaboration of the Warsaw School of Economics.

At the Congress, USC trends were analyzed as was the evolution and implementation of its mobile application (USC App) and its situation and progress in the 12 countries where it is in use. Currently, there are more than nine million cards in 280 universities.

This recognition assesses the process of improving the USC, promoted by UC3M Administration. It has incorporated the following uses for the card. First, the procedure for obtaining the card has been optimized so that it can be obtained in less than two minutes at Campus branches of the Banco Santander. Secondly, the USC functions have been augmented to enable its use for public bicycle rentals in the towns of Getafe and Leganés, as well as to access the entire network of libraries in the Autonomous Region of Madrid. Third, the USC has been standardized with other cards: on an internal level, with the UC3M sports and cultural activities card; and on an external level, with the ISIC (International Student Identity Card) Association. The ISIC issues the only cards endorsed by the UNESCO, which recognizes the cardholder’s status as student, faculty or administrative staff on an international level. Lastly, the first steps have been taken to offer all these advantages in digital format through the UC3M-USC application, which represents an evolution of the card to mobile devices.
